First time in 6 years -at the YMCA-*****UPDATE

It was bound to happen as I have been nursing for almost 6 years and have only had good experiences until yesterday.
Here is what happened( and boy am I glad I live in Minnesota!):

Here is part of the e-mail my group leader ( we go to the Y as a Homeschooling group pool date) received from them yesterday 5/5:

"....I also wanted to touch base with you about the incident this week when our guard spoke to one of your group about breastfeeding. I wanted to apologize on his behalf and assure you that we have taken steps to make all staff aware of our support of breastfeeding anywhere in the YMCA. I assume that, as a young man, he was personally uncomfortable. However, that does not reflect our facility's policy and he should have not approached the mother in any way. If you will, please pass on our support to your group. "

I am glad that the right steps are been taken by them.

I also will be updating again because my friend wrote and awesome article for out local newspaper ( I said I had people!) about the incident and is beeing printed this week!

Not literally. But in my book breastfeeding is sacred and anything said against it is a profanity for me.
Isn't the Y a Christian Institution?

Good for you, Polykow!

I would have loved to have seen that one. Way to go, mama.

Thank you!!! For all the mama's who are too shy, or truly couldn't bf, thank you for standing up and declaring in no uncertain terms that they need to shut up and educate themselves.

Thank you too for NIP. The more that we show young people that bfing IS THE NORM, hopefully more will give their children what is the ultimate food for a baby and stop feeding them substandard grub.

"So after I was done with them they put their little tails between their legs"

WTG! I wish I'd been so articulate on the spot when I was confronted at a Y about breastfeeding my son! Instead I ended up writing a letter explaining the law... and got a letter back saying they thought they were within their rights to tell me to move/cover... I still haven't quite decided what to do next.

Haha! I love the last line.

I think you handled that really well.

good for you. I'm always shocked at these women that leave when someone tells them to stop nursing their baby. I almost want someone to try that on me...

That is awesome. : I don't know you but as I read that I imagined some "OH NO YOU DIDN'T!" and finger snapping. Good job! And I think you are a better person than I because I probably wouldn't have accepted their apologies and instead would have said, "Shove it up your [you know what]," and then later would have felt bad about that.

way to go mama

Woohoo! Good job mama!

Awesome

Looks like the rest of the staff needs to read what's posted on their own walls too.
