yet another question from me...

I am planning on making the ribbed 1932 wool soaker from xanga. She mentions she likes to use the Peruvian wool from elann.com, and uses #5 needles. The Peruvian wool I see at elann recommends #6 needles. Does it matter? Can I still use this

http://www.elann.com/productdisp.asp...derBy=&Count=8

or is there a better option?

Also I see that is comes in 1.75 oz. balls. Would I have to buy about 3-4 balls to make the soaker?

I am a totally newbie so any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

You should use whatever needles it takes for you to get the gauge the pattern calls for with the yarn you use. How big is your baby? I would think a couple of balls would be more than enough, in fact, if you have a nb, I bet one is enough.

Thanks!

just a side note, but alpaca is known to be much warmer than wool--something you might want to consider when making a diaper cover.

Happy knitting!

Hmm, I saw they had some Alpaca at elann.com....something more to consider.

I just took a peek at the yarn after reading mamasthree's response. I dunno if I'd use pure alpaca for a soaker. It's soft and lovely, but can stretch out of shape, and has long, fuzzy fibers that may end up in your babe's mouth. I assumed is was something like KnitPick's Wool of the Andes, http://www.knitpicks.com/wool%20of%2...YD5420103.html, which is really reasonable, comes in tons of colors, and works well. But did I read that you're in Canada? They don't ship there.

From the site you mentioned, I'd probably try one of these:

http://www.elann.com/productdisp.asp...erBy=&Count=34

my post was in response to the yarn you linked to--I should have been more specific in my post, sorry! I personally wouldn't use alpaca for a soaker or longies, because I think it would be too hot on babe's bum. But if you live somewhere cold (like, um, Canada) then maybe that would be a good thing--in winter at least!

Thanks all of you. I think Ill go with the Peruvian wool from elann and skip the alpaca, because it's going to start getting hot here (I hope!!!!). Since I am new to knitting I have no idea really what I'm ordering, I really appreciate all the advice!
