So this is the story of Kezia's first 5 days. On April 23rd I told Kathlin's belly not to come today because I was tired. At 2:30 in the morning Kathlin called me into the bathroom and said that she thought her water broke. I went in and sure enough it had, I called Astrid (our midwife) to let her know, and she said to call her when her contractions start. About a half hour later they had so we called Astrid again and she headed over. She lives about an hour away and she arrived here at about 4:30 in the morning. We went through the process of the labor with Kathlin being in the tub for a little bit, she was great. After awhile we went into the bedroom and I was there helping we were all very calm and things were going great. At about 10 am Astrid said the babies head had no hair so we got onto the bed and I laid behind Kathlin and held her. Within a short time Astrid realized that the baby was breach (somehow she turned while Kathlin was in labor). The baby was coming out butt first, so we had to go to the hospital. We all got into the car we had an extra midwife (because usually their are two). Kathlin and Astrid got in back I was in front and the other midwife drove. I was very scared and Kathlin was in the back still pushing because you can't stop at that point. We got to the hospital and were rushed into the O.R. I had to change into scrubs real quick and went in. Astrid and the other midwife waited outside. On the way to the O.R. they were talking about doing a C-Section but, Kezia was too far. At 10:36am Kezia Grace came out butt first. Kathlin had a vaginal breach birth without drugs which is very very rare. She's a ROCK STAR.
Most of what happened next is because Kezia had a traumatic birth and was three weeks early. We had to go to a room afterwards were doctors came in and out. They were worried about Kezia's blood sugar because it was low and was fluctuating they tested numerous times (pricks in the heel) through out the day. Kezia was given formula through a tube down her throat to get her blood sugar up. They continued checking and it wasn't getting any better. At about 2:30 in the morning Kezia was admitted to the N.I.C.U. Kathlin had to stay in the room and I went up with Kezia and stayed by her bed all night until Kathlin came up at about 5:30 in the morning. Then I went to our room for a little sleep. She was under a heat lamp and they had to give her I forget the name but, it's pretty much sugar water through an I.V. We were there through the day until about 7. They also noticed that she was a little jaundice but, nothing to really worry about at the time.
We came home and we were here for almost 24hours when we had to go back to the hospital to get a Billy Ruben test (for jaundice). We came back home and were called back about a half hour later because her Billiruben level was high and her sugar was low so we had to get readmitted (that was on Saturday). We got put into this place in the hospital that was great way better than the N.I.C.U. everyone was really nice. Kezia was tested again numerous times for her sugar and put into a billibed which is like a clear crib with a blue light coming through the bottom and for breast feeding there was something called a wallaby which is a light strip that you would lay on your arm and then Kezia would lay on that. Early Sunday morning Kathlin's milk came in (she had been pumping on and off all night). We started giving her the breast milk in her feeding tube (instead of the formula), and that is when everything started to turn around. Her blood sugar went up and stabilized, and her Billiruben levels were going down. We were about to leave on Monday because her blood sugar was OK and her Billiruben was low enough. On the way out they said that the test they had done for the Billiruben a few hours before was up again and that we would have to stay one more day. By that point we were so emotionally drained because of this whole thing and we were so close to leaving. We had Kezia in one hand and our bags all packed and we were so excited. Major up to major low. So this morning we had another Billiruben test done and she passed and we were home at 6:00am (the 29th). What a crazy emotional roller coaster. Stats: Kezia Grace born 10:36am April 24th, 2008 5lbs 13oz. 18 inches long.
