Sock yarn for soakers?

Is there any way I can make a soaker out of sock yarn? It's 100% merino.

If I do it straight, like making a large size with a smaller yarn/smaller gage, I'll get a small/newborn size. But will it be too thin a fabric?

What if I use it double? Does that work? It seems like a bulky, somewhat inflexible fabric when I swatched it double. I could go up a needle size or two over what I thought. But I'm worried I'd run out of yarn.

Anyone have experiences with this?

I've seen a pair of longies on ravelry knitted with Kauni, which is fingering weight- they were knitted flat in garter stitch. I actually really like that idea, of garter stitch at a tight gauge, because you'd get a dense but somewhat flexible fabric.

I'd get knitting swatches and seeing what you think.

That's an interesting idea, totally hadn't thought of that.

I'm leaning toward doing it double stranded. I've been swatching and I think it's too dense, I'll have to go up needle sizes, but I like what it does to the very low key varigation.

just make sure it's not superwash!

I did a LTK Ribby Wrap with a really light weight wool (slightly heavier than fingering, but not quite sport weight). I stitched up the XL numbers, and wound up with maybe a M size. It's not heavy enough for night-time, but I think it'll be just fine during the day.
