question with the dr.

My son is not cir. (after much research from you guys-thanks!) and he is 5 months old now, but when we went in for his check-up. I asked if that pinkness on the tip is normal from irritation, dr. said yes and as a matter of fact, he is already retracted at the tip and she showed me and said about at age 1, you can start pushing it back to help him retract it. Right now to leave it alone.

I was confused, I thought we are not supposed to retract at all? And was it okay that the dr. retract a little bit at the top? If not, do you think the dr. damaged him!?

The doc probably didn't damage him, but you're right, you should be leaving it alone. NO ONE should retract him! It can take until puberty (or beyond) for your ds to be able to retract (himself.)

What A&A said.

And~ The pink at the tip of the foreskin is perfectly normal.

You do not have to "help" his foreskin retract. The advice from the doctors who are most knowledgeable about and supportive of not circumcising is LEAVE IT ALONE!

What pp's have said. He shouldnt have retracted it at all but probably no damage was done. Just watch for any irritation and if you see it get some OTC bacatracin and put it on there to help protect it and help it heal.

If you havnt read the Warning Sticky at the top of the main CAC page you should do so now along with the Definition of Retraction one.

I think the most valuable thing this doctor has done for you and your child is to give you fair warning that she intends to forcibly retract his foreskin.

If you choose to go back to her, you should issue a warning that your son's foreskin is not to be retracted even a little bit, not even to take a peek. Advise her that any pulling, tugging or pressure on his foreskin will be considered attempted retraction and that you'll have lawyers descending on her like the swallows at Capistrano.

ITA and in addition, she had given fair warning that she will be pushing for circumcision for imagined 'phimosis' by the time he is 3.

Exactly! And I think that any parent with an intact son, needs to be aware that doctors can be misinformed about retraction, and make it clear that the foreskin is NEVER to be retracted. I wasn't aware of forcible retraction by a doctor before I started reading in this forum.

My ds would get red and irritated like that when he was still in diapers.
I put him in his bath seat in the bathtub and rinsed his penis with clean water, pouring it right at the tip and the redness went away.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. I appreciate it. My husband is FURIOUS about what the doctor said and I thought she was on the same page as we were on this as we were on vaccinations. So we have been watching him and no infection and we are much at ease now after reading the sticky note and your comments. Thanks!
