Something I discovered today...

If you need to keep your toddler busy for a few minutes while you're in the kitchen, give him or her an onion. My DD found my big bag of onions today and had an absolute ball peeling the outer layers off of them. Of course, then I had to sweep up all the onion peel off the floor, but that was OK.

I'll have to try her on a hardboiled egg next -- I remember my DS used to love (and spend a LONG time) peeling eggs.

That's a great idea. I like to give my lo a whole piece of fruit to chew on or a squash or something to play with. She also loves different sizes of cans (if you have them) little tomato paste and diced green chiles are easy for her to pick up and stack. So much fun stuff in the kitchen!

My dd would eat it.... i let her get into all the cupboards though, she likes pulling out the pots and pans, and pushing all the buttons on the blender. Whatever keeps em happy and distracted right

Unless your toddler is like my little sister, who LOVED raw onions and garlic as a baby. My mom would pick her up at her daycare providers house and she would absolutely reek!

I like you idea, though, and am going to try it with DD.

Maybe your toddler would like it, maybe not. But that would be a good scientific experiment. Hoorah for a multi-sensory activity!

By the way, my dfd loves to shred paper, so she'd go ga-ga for something like this. She also really appreciates it when I give her nori (paper-like seaweed...folks use it to wrap sushi, but when it is dry it is nice and crinkly and shred-friendly), which she both eats and tears up.

This is a great activity for them! DD also peels onions and garlic (I give her the garlic to peel when I'm cooking so she helps me). She discovered them in the cupboard a while back and is hooked on getting all those loose layers off. She takes bites of the onions and garlic too. no problem.

Both my kids have always loved peeling onions. It's the first thing they do when we get new onions.

My sister, too! My Nana used to make her raw onion and salami sammies after school and she would torture me with her onion breath.

I like the idea of can stacking. My DD was kinda teed off when i finally childproofed some drawers because i was tired of constantly hunting for my measuring cups. Still has access to pots and pans, though.

She is also lucky enough to have a small play kitchen that i moved into the big kitchen so we can 'cook' together. So cute!

Yes!
This is also a great way to keep a toddler occupied in the grocery store. Start out in the produce section, grab an onion, and the kid will stay occupied the whole time. At least this worked with mine and once she peeled herself to sleep right there in the shopping cart.

My DD loves to peel the sticker off anything so a basket of produce is like a little slice of heaven!
