Question

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that if you have big aureole's it's hard to breastfeed, I don't know if it's true so that's why I'm asking you gals. Mine (are naturally big) were huge after I had my daughter, and I had a lot of trouble with breastfeeding her. I want to try breastfeeding my son when he's born but I want to know if having huge aureole's is going to effect doing so and if I should just pump instead?

When I breastfed my daughter, I was in horrible pain the whole time and it felt like she wasn't latching on correctly. I went to the hospital and spoke with a nurse and she told me my baby had a good latch but from what I could tell, it didn't seem like she was getting enough of it in her mouth.

I don't know if it guarantees a hard time, but I do have large areolas, and had issues. We discovered that the glands that release the milk are further back in my breast than most, and it caused pressure issues. Dd refused to latch at birth, and I started pumping. After 6 days with the standard flanges, I had blisters b/c the pump had to work too hard to get the milk out. I moved up on the size, and it completely eased the issue. DD did not latch until 10 weeks, and when she did she was able to take quite a bit into her mouth. I don't know what will happen with this one due in Nov.
