topper instead of organic or latex mattress?

not sure if I'm posting this in the right place.. . .

I have my heart set on a new mattress (latex or organic) but it looks like we might have to put this off for right now because of money concerns....

Does anyone have any input to share about toppers (organic/wool/latex)? Do they work? I want to eliminate the amount of toxins that are coming out of our old (12 years!) mattress. We plan on cosleeping and I want to protect the baby, especially as a tiny infant. And if you have one, where did you get it?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated !

I posted a while back about how I made my own latex and wool mattress by buying three inch toppers from a few manufacturers. I so far have spent about 1000 on both our queen and DS's twin- we have 3" firm latex and 2" of wool topper on the floor. It is very comfortable, but we are going to get both another 3" soft latex layer to make it even better. The two companies I used are:

https://www.immunesupport.com/shop/p...t__code/N0168P

and

http://www.absolutecomfortonsale.com/latexfoam.htm

which has toppers of various thicknesses for a variety of budgets.

I've been wondering the same thing myself - looking at some of IKEA's offerings. But I would say that if your mattress is 12 years old, there is not much out-gassing happening any more. I think. Not an expert, of course.

I agree. The older the mattress the less crap there is left. There is no off-gassing going on at this point.
I LOVE this company and I would recommend any product of theirs.

really? that's so great to hear!

eventually we will need a bigger bed (okay well we need one now..) but if we can put it off it might be better for our savings acct

what would you buy? (or what did you buy?) the wool topper or the other ones?

You can buy much cheaper, yet 100% Talalay latex mattresses here:

I don't have one yet, but I really want one.

I went back to check the IKEA mattresses - we were looking at the topper with wool wadding, and it's only $100 less than the actual full mattress with wool, latex, and cotton($399). I hadn't looked for a few months, but that's what we're planning to spend a rebate check on.
