May TTC w/ Maca - Page 5

For the past few days, I have been choking back 1 tablespoon of Maca mixed in water in a shot glass (because I read someone did that on here and I didn't have any good smoothie/milkshake stuff on hand). I'd like to start taking 2 tablespoons in a blended shake tonight, and Jen, I'm basing my drink on the recipe you offered. Question: Is two tablespoons too much for a 20ish-ounce shake? I want it to taste pretty good, but I also want to pack in as much Maca as possible. I will probably have to experiment with this on my own, but first I wanted to request the collective wisdom on this.
For me 2tbs at a time was too much. We do one tbs AM and PM. It's doable esp. with cinnamon added. We are going to try an orange, pinnapple juice next week. I tried it with apple and it just didn't blend right. yuck.

Welcome DogLady! You're added. Best wishes to you...

Congrats RunnerMommy! Very exciting....hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months.

And welcome new DogLady!

VeganMama - Yes, maca did push back my O date, but I still do not know when I ovulated last cycle...CD17 or CD21...it was the funkiest cycle ever with temps all over the place.

I'm going to continue to take it because I noticed the increased libido, plus another great "side effect" - it significantly lightened up my AF. I usually have 2 days of very heavy AF, followed by a medium day, then light and spotting. CD2 is typically the heaviest day and yesterday was CD2, not heavy at all! In fact, I may now have an AF like many people describe with just one heavy day. I would be so psyched! I feel like this is my hormones "normalizing" to something better.

On the other hand, I decided to take Clomid this month. I wish I could give Maca another 6 months to do its thing, but I'm no spring chicken any and I just feel like I'm running out of time. So this cycle will be maca + clomid.

Anyone else do clomid + maca?

Thanks guys for all your responses about delayed O.

AF actually showed up today on 17 DPO or 6 DPO, depending on whether you go with FF's original O date of CD 15 (normal for me) ot the revised date of CD 26.

Normally AF is not painful for me. This month she is killing me. Before my miscarriage in February I had text book 14 day LPs.

Fortunately I had some hormone testing done this month on CD 21. So at least we should be able to tell by my progesterone level if I had O'd by then or not.

My guess is that I had a very early m/c.

I'm not sure whether I should continue taking the maca or not. Certainly it doesn't seem to be a positive experience this month. However, I know sometimes you need to give things at least 3 months.

So, not sure what to do at this point.

So I have been taking Maca 450mg cap. everyday for about 3-4 weeks now and AF showed up yesterday/today and with this cycle everything has been odd. I "o" pretty late and then started AF on CD 31, which is also late for me, and it started with the worst cramps I've ever had in my life - I actually thought I was going to throw up. I realize that I'm really not on that much Maca a day, but it just seems weird that this cycle has been so odd. Anyone else have weird experiences like this where it has changed your "o" date and lengthened your cycle when you first started it??? I'm not sure if I should be scared of what it is doing or not??? Can anyone relate or have any advice???

You are describing my cycle almost exactly. See my post right before yours. It's kind of freaky actually. My cramps are usually very mild. Today they are worse than my m/cin February, they are kicking my ass.

wow, that does sound like mine! Sorry, I should have read back a bit to kinda do some research before I posted I guess. It's kinda crazy that you mentioned about the m/c issue b/c I was talking to a girl at work today about it (weird cramps) and she said "do you think you maybe had a miscarriage?". I really didn't think I did, but who knows. I did take a pregnancy test on Sat b/c my cycle was going so long and it was a BFN so I'd doubt it, but i don't know. So sorry to hear about your m/c in Feb. Did you actually get a BFP when you had yours in feb. or this month?? You said you had some hormone testing done this month...i'm assuming you had it done while you were on the meca is that right?? did you mention that to your dr by any chance?? Sorry if these questions are redundant and are already answered in previous posts. I need to actually just find the time to sit down and read the whole meca thread sometime here. I started but then haven't kept up with the last several days. Good luck to you! You will have to keep us posted.

Wow. blueyezz4 and veganmama719 I hope you both start to feel better soon. I never had any problems with maca, in fact it seems like it helped me o earlier. I hope that things start to even out for you.

Thanks LibraryMo!

Blueyezz4, my m/c in February was at 7w1d and I had several positive Pg tests.. I wasn't taking Maca then. It was a blighted ovum PG. This is the most common reason for m/c and tends to increase as you get older. It is generally caused by a chromosonal issue with the fertilized egg.
I also tested BFN on Saturday as my temp was still up and it would have been 15 DPO. So I don't have any "proof" that I was PG again but I suspect that it's what it was. Otherwise my AF came at 6 DPO! Very scary thought.

I am seeing a naturopath and she ordered the testing a "full female panel". Because I am older (in terms of babymaking) and not getting PG as quickly as I did when I was younger we just wanted to rule some things out. Yes, I did take maca all month the month of the testing.

I think I am going to take it again this cycle and see what happens.

Good luck to you and everyone else on this thread, especially the 4 of us who are experienceing these strange cycles!

I'm pretty sure I O'd!! Temp was up this morning . I just hope it stays up. We bd for four days straight, and I had tons of ewcm, so I'm hopeful!!!!! I'm on CD 28.

good luck, katiedidbug! sounds promising!!

my dh and i have been using maca as well (since march 08) and love it. it is powerful! my sex drive has been pretty high and my cycle is quite regular. we are ttc and have good feelings about it. if not this month then soon soon. maca tastes great with chocolate drinks. i like to blend cacao powder, coconut oil, young coconut water with coconut meat, agave nectar and a 2 tbsp of maca. i'm going to try it with this recipe too- it looks even better.

is maca-- baby dust?!
Blueyezz4 and veganmama719, I started taking maca 5 days ago (the day I O'ed) and I think I'm starting AF today! This is the first month I've temped so I'm not sure if I've always had a short LP or if taking maca could be related. I, too, am going back through the thread to learn more.

On another note, I learned last night that Maca goes down great in a traditional chocolate shake with rich ingrediants! It also enticed DH, who has been very skeptical of maca, to imbibe his share. We agreed that you can still taste the maca, but it doesn't make the drink any less yummy.

I have a quick question about maca capsules--would the non-organic kind with 500mg/capsule be ok or do you think only organic is the way to go? TIA! (I usually post on the nursing mamas ttc, but am trying to bring on my first pp af!)
veganmama719 - sorry to hear about your blighted ovum PG. That is very scary!!! Hopefully the full female panel will answer some of your questions and get to the bottom of it. When do you expect your results?? I have done a full female panel with saliva testing, but not sure what all test are the same with those two panels. I have actually been on vitamins after the saliva testing results to help regulate my hormones and I have kinda just added the Meca (small amount) myself with my chiropractor aware of the fact that I'm taking it. I'm suppose to be seeing a new RE the first week of June and I'm sure she might want to do some labs but i'm not sure.

Have you noticed any difference in your cycle (AF) this time around??? Mine is definitely not normal but my temp finally dipped today but was still up yesterday while i was kinda spotting/light bleeding. I've had kinda a weird headache all day today too, not sure if that is hormone related. I'm just hoping that my body is just adjusting to the vitamins/meca and needs more time to get situated and leveled out. Was your naturopath the one that suggested Meca to you?? Are you taking the powder form? I think I'm going to try to continue to take it as well... we will see!!!! There are times i feel like i'm playing with fire taking all this stuff, but nothing else has worked so I just figure "what do i have to lose"?????

sonuptosondown- sorry I can't help answer your question but i will be keeping my eyes open for the answer b/c i also am more interested in the caps since i don't think i can stomach the powder.

DogLady - glad to hear you found a good way to take your meca!!! I guess we all should have known that chocolate would be a good thing to mix it with!!! Chocolate = women's best friend!!!

LibraryMo - thanks for the good thoughts. I sure hope things even out for all of us too! Just seems weird that it is doing such weird things for some of us, but i guess we are all different and that is a good thing. If everyone was the same the world would really be a boring place!!!!

Hi Deb!! I recognize you from the nursing mom's forum. I take 1800 mgs a day in capsule form, and I'm pretty sure they're not organic. Since maca, from what I've heard, is a food, I'm sure it's like anything...Organice is ideal but not completely necessary to get the benefit. KWIM?

AFM, I'm on 2 dpo, I think. After a temp spike yesterday, it went down slightly. Could you guys look at my chart and tell me what you think? I had tons of ewcm and op.
I'm hoping the maca will help lengthen my lp.

sonuptosondown I take the regular capsules from Solaray they are 525 mg.

TMI Alert Has anyone noticed a volume increase in your husbands ejaculation? I feel like mine has more than ever to release when we make love. He has been on maca as long as I have (March 30th) but he only takes 1000 mg a day. I am hopeful that it is increasing and enabling his swimmers to catch an egg.

Hi blueyezz4, my AF was definitely different this cycle. Much heavier and crampier.
I should get the saliva testing results by Monday at the latest. I am hoping my naturopath/acupunturist will call me with them before hand but we have an appointment on Monday if not.
She did not recommend the Maca, I started taking it on my own and yes, I also feel like I am playing with fire with all these vitamins and supplements. However, I have seen some improvements in EWCM so I think some of it is working.
I stopped going to the RE, she was way too interventionist for me. She wanted me to move on to injectibles plus IUI right away and I wanted to see if the acupunture and herbs would work after a few months. I got PG that very cycle but it seems to be taking my body some time to straighten itself out from the m/c.
How long have you been TTC now? How old are you?
Headaches are often hormone related.
Sorry for the third degree, I am just very interested in all this stuff!

Katie, it looks like you'll have to wait for the next couple of days of temps to be sure, but I think you can assume you o'ed based on ewcm and op. IMO, those markers are just as reliable as temps, if not more.

Re: Playing with fire, the more I learn about maca, the more OK I feel about taking it without asking my doctor. It seems totally safe. I'm more concerned about spending $$ on maca when i'm not 100% sure it will help me, but I still think it's worth a try. Maybe I'll change my tune if next cycle is all wonky like what some of you have experienced!
Thanks, DogLady. I wouldn't ask your dr; chances are he/she has never heard of maca. Most drs aren't too familiar w/ herbs, supplements, etc, kwim? I know mine usually has no idea what I'm talking about.

Thank you all for the wealth of knowledge on this thread!

I was wondering if you all think that maca should be something that hubby and I should be taking.

Backgroud: DH has a severe sperm morphology problem (0-1% normal shape). We got pregnant once on our own that ended in a m/c. In order to have our son we did IVF. I have always O'd just fine. Very regular cycles. We are currently TTC #2, although we don't expect much.

So, do you think that maca would be beneficial to us? Any thoughts will be much appreicated!!
