Are your stores running out of flour & rice??

We went to the nearby Costco on Saturday and they only had white long grain rice in stock (usually stock brown rice, jasmine rice, basmatic, etc).

They also didn't have any bread flour in stock.

I have to say it worried me a bit.

Higher prices are one thing, but no food is another.

No, I did go one day and most of the rice was gone but the next day it ,as fully stocked. I have not seen an increase in prices of either.

No, but my flour did go up $2 in the last 2 weeks, and eggs $1.

Eggs are the same here. I pay $2.09 for a dozen of the jumbo size eggs.

What was strangest is that they just weren't out of stock they had completely eliminated the tags that indicated they stocked those items and had moved other products into the spots previously occupied by the other rices and the bread flour. It honestly looked as though they weren't planning to stock them again.

I know with warehouse type stores they're constantly re-arranging things because it's just a matter of bringing in a pallet and sticking a sticker on the shelf.

I'd heard that rice was going up in price, but all the 10# bags of converted/enriched rice seemed to be about the same. The smaller bags of rice (jasmine and basmati) are *incredibly* expensive! One small bag, probably 8oz, or so, was $6.99!!!

I feel like buying up a couple 10# bags just to have some around for a while.

I've heard of rice riots in Africa recently too (due to the wheat crops going bad), kinda frightening. Famine on a world scale is a really horrible thought.

kari, I agree. Costco had removed the tags as if they weren't just waiting to restock. They had no rice or wheat/flour. We saw sugar, chips and crackers in their place. When we went to the supermarket, they were out of 25 lb bags of flour so we bought 10 lb bags. No one seems particularly alarmed here, but seems like a lot of people may have trouble stocking their summer base camps (tourism, subsistence hunting, fishing, etc.). My sil in Fairbanks is seeing the same sort of thing - reminds her of last winter when there were storms that kept supplies down in Seattle - eerily empty store shelves.

I'll have to check back at the store and see if maybe they restocked on Sunday.

Our stores have full stock right now. There are days when I go & there is none, but that's because the truck either hasn't arrived yet or the stock is still sitting in the back & it'll be out in 1-2 days(the trucks come every 2 days)
