I'm not sure i like the word pain, as labor is not painful unless you are anticipating pain. I would suggest that all new mama's read all of Ina May Gaskins Books. She does a wodnerful job of explaining what a woman goes through in labor and birth. Birth is about turning inward and focusing on the job set out before you. Having a loving gentle peaceful environment in which to labor and go with the waves your body is flowing on. I would never describe child birth as painful in any way shape or form.
i can't honestly say that i had any pain with either of my labors (6 hours for the first, 1.5 hours for the second).
i did find the intensity of the contractions overwhelmingly strong near the end -- like my body was being taken over by an alien force over which i had no control. that intensity can seem frightening, and i can see how some women might try to fight it or tighten up against the contractions.
i just surrendered to this force, went with the flow, and it actually felt pretty amazing.
the only moment when i felt a kind of pain was the burning sensation as the head crowned, but that was only a brief moment.
as wacky as it may sound, i'm excited about going into labor again. it's a thrilling, mind-altering experience
