A friend wants me to make a piddle pad for her son's crib. This is to go on top of the sheet. He's in CD and doesn't *usually* leak but she wants one for those times he does. I've never sewn anything like this, so I have a few questions.
1) She wanted to know if I could use a minkee or chenille as the top layer (the one her son would lay on top of). Will either of these work? I've never touched minkee, so I wasn't sure if wetness would roll off or absorb through.
2) I was then going to add an absorbent layer of hemp French terry or sherpa knit terry (open to other suggestions as well). Should I do one layer or two? Since he's already got the CD on, I thought I could get away with one layer.
3) If I use PUL for the bottom layer, I'm thinking that may be too slick once he starts moving around in his sleep? I could use elastic band to go around the mattress. Sometimes he comes to bed with them and she'd ideally like this pad to work there also. So an elastic band wouldn't work for there. Other ideas?
4) If I put some other fabric on the bottom (making the PUL "hidden"), that could make it wick, right?
5) I should use a 100% polyester thread, correct? I've read that even the cotton thread can cause wicking?
6) Will my standard needle work or do I need to use my heavy-duty (denim, I think its called) needle?
Thank you!!
