Oh boy! He is a programmer and I am sooo NOT. LOL I asked and he may as well be speaking a foreign language. From what I gather, he used "dashboard", which is a Mac/Apple program in OSX. Yahoo and other companies offer widgets, too. Sorry I cannot help more than that.

It was on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving in U.S.) only on woot.com, one of those "a deal a day" sites. We were checking every day at 10 pm Pacific Time for awhile last year and then found whatever it was we were looking for (I don't recall which specific product right now) and stopped checking. A friend had told us about the site. There are others, too. The idea is the company sells only one product every 24 hours or when it runs out of stock. Since the variety of inventory is so limited, they don't need as much space and can keep the costs lower...along with bulk pricing, etc. You can read up on these places at Wikipedia. We made a few purchases through Woot last year and all items were a good price and shipped well and work. Shipping is $5 for 1-3 items (the only quantities you can buy anyway).

I'm 99% sure he got them on www.woot.com - they sell one item per day and they sold scoobas a couple of months ago. They have $5 shipping no matter how many you buy.

I have hardwoods with failing finish, that had carpet over them. I have a steam cleaner that works well to clean with just water. I also stripped them with ammonia to remove old wax - that helps TONS. Then I just washed and scrubbed and kept at it and they are much cleaner now.

Everyone who said they have a scooba on this thread, please come give me some feedback on them on my scooba thread: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=902129 (I didn't want to hijack this thread with scooba questions)

Pretty please? Thank you!

So, it sounds like the Scooba is about the only way to not have black feet? I too am a member of the black feet family. I vacuum every day and mop 2-3 times per week. My DS is crawling and his knees/shins/tops of feet are black within minutes of crawling around. It is so disgusting and depressing!!!!!! How can we possible be tracking that much dirt in?

Has anyone used the Scooba with laminated hard floors (like Pergo)?

I used to work at a place that left black feet on everyone. The owner used SOOOO much soap in the carpet cleaning machine. There was soap in the carpet - tons of it and you just couldn't get it clean.
I wonder if it's like diapers that need to be stripped - there is residual soap on the floor holding onto the dirt.
I will admit that I mostly wash with steam/water - no soap, and my floors gradually are staying cleaner. Perhaps that is one solution?

that's a good point, apricot. I just use vinegar and water to clean my floors. No residue, just sparkling clean.

We have pergo, too. I'd love to know if anyone has experience with using Scooba on pergo. I'll check out the other thread, too.

I used vinegar and water for about 2 years on our floors. I have a squirt bottle, and I spray and mop it up. A few months ago I noticed how dirty the cloth I clean the floors with was, so I went back over the floors a second time. Again, dirty! I went over it a third time -- DIRTY!! I wondered if it was because I wasn't using anything soapy for so long and had just been moving dirt around for two years with vinegar and water. I'm also thinking it might be that I'm just not using enough elbow grease since I tend to mop one-handed with the squirt bottle in my other hand.

sometimes I add a little dr. bronners to the mix. But I NEVER mop, it's a waste of time IMO. You have to get down there and scrub with a rag -IME that's the only way to keep a floor clean. but I'm cooky like that and actually enjoy it. It's very meditative.

If you refinish your floors with a polyurethane finish, you will be amazed at how much easier they are to maintain.

If there is any waxy or greasy residue on the floor, then mopping with water or vinegar will not work because vinegar cannot dissolve wax or grease. Also, soaps like Murphy's or Bronners can also leave soapy residues. Wax, grease, or soap residues will be dirt magnets.

Citrus oil solvents or a mild ammonia solution are excellent for removing residues, and will leave floors much cleaner. Do not use sudsy ammonia!

I like Jeff Campbell's techniques - he explains them really well in his book. He recommends the Sh-mop with several removable washable covers. Put a few inches of hot water in your kitchen sink. Add a small amount of ammonia. Wet a shmop cover and mop with it. When it is dirty, put it in the wash (do not put the dirty cover in the clean ammonia solution!). Keep using new covers until the floor is clean. No dirty pail, cleans your sink, covers get super clean in the laundry, you can see if your floor is getting clean, and NO residues.

Ammonia should be used in a well ventilated area and it should be kept away from children. Although it is a strong chemical, it is environmentally friendly and pure .

I am, however, considering the roomba and scooba because I don't do the above often enough .
