New Home or 100 Year old Home?

e are moving to Louisville this summer, and we found an older home. It's beautiful, and totally renovated, but I worry about toxins because it is older and my son is 8 months old. It's over 100 years old, but totally renovated. They took out asbestos around one year ago. It smells like a mixture of paint and "old". Two families have lived in the house over the past 3 years and then moved out for different reasons- one to change schools, the other had a sick child and moved out to be closer to family (makes me suspicious that there are 2 families in and out pretty quick!). Anyone have experience with older homes? What environmental toxins should I watch out for? Would you feel comfortable with such an old home or look for something newer? It's a really incredible space, but I'm not sure if it's better to go older, or newer. Both seem to have dangers! I'd build green in a heartbeat, but my husband is afraid we'd get transferred before we completed the project- we might get moved overseas after 2-3 years of living where we are now. Thanks.

For completely different reasons than you are asking about..

I would pick a new home.

But, ONLY because I don't like to fix things. I want it new and I want seven or so years before I have to replace things.

We tried to sell my Grandfather's home in Saint Louis. It was 135 years old at the time. Other homes were selling in that area for 200K. (it was an amazing house though)

By the time the building inspector got through it, it would have been cheaper to blow it up and start over. So, we sold it to a contractor for $14K. It basically needed to be condemmed.

My grandparents had never done anything to it in 75 years though. Not even paint. So, I would imagine that a house that had been well loved and cared for would have more potential to be an awsome home.

I love old architecture though!!!!!

I live in a house that is over 200 years old, and I love it! You do need to be a bit of a handy-woman (or have a handy-man at hand), though. I suppose it depends a lot on the state of the house, but even on our house, which has been reasonably well kept, there's always something that needs doing. I think it is healthier than a new house because it breathes, and it has a special charm that I feel that new houses often lack.
