Dhimitri's Birth Story **(VERY LONG)**

Sorry this is so long!!

I went to bed shortly after midnight on May 5th, which was my due date based on my date of ovulation. DD came into bed in the middle of the night and when she woke me up I realized I had been cramping all night and continued to do so. I never did end up getting sleep that night b/t her and the cramping.

That morning I got the kids ready for school and used the restroom, where I felt my plug slip out- looked into the toilet and sure enough it was tinged with blood. I go and hurry and take an online quiz due that day for school and realize that I don’t think I will be making my final exam for another class scheduled for the 6th. I email my prof. and ask if there is anyway I could take the exam that same day. Went and took a shower, as the cramping increased. Checked my email and he had replied saying to go to his office and tell his secretary that he said its ok for her to give me the final that day instead.

DH goes with me and we get there (30 minute drive) and the secretary had just left for lunch. We decide to stay and wait until she gets back at 1pm. I realize then that I am having contractions 5-7 minutes apart. She finally comes and I take the exam. My school is right by my birthing center and I was tempted to stop by and see what they say but we didn’t have time, the kids get off the bus at 2:20pm and ds needs his meds and I need my bag etc.

At this point I am having contractions 3 minutes apart, and driving in the opposite direction of the BC back to my house. I call and tell my step-mom and dad and they meet me at the house to get the kids off the bus. Dh and I leave for the BC.

We arrive at the birth center at around 3 pm and the midwife on duty checked me and I was only 5 cm.

Every time she checked me I had only progressed 1 cm- she kept suggesting (b/c I was refusing to stand up to labor to bring the baby down) that she could break my water and the baby would come but I was scared of the more intense pain, I was already in so much pain. All I could do was sit at the edge of the bed, I did labor in the shower awhile too and that felt great. She kept wanting me to stand up but I was just so weak from not eating all day that I couldn’t do it. Finally at 9 cm (sometime after 11pm) I agreed to let her break my water. She got me to stand up for a couple of contractions and then I told her I had to sit down b/c I was so weak and the pressure was too much. She told me to get on my hands and knees on the bed so I agree and I had one or two contractions- and then I felt a huge pop and ds’s head slammed down inside of me and water gushed and he started coming on his own. I got on my side and started pushing, yelling at the top of my lungs LOL and out he started coming. She was totally hands off and it seemed so weird to me to not be told what to do like they do at the hospital I had ds1 and dd at, I even asked “what should I do?” She just kept telling me to welcome him and let him come out. She let my body do its job on its own. When his head was halfway out his heart beat dropped really really low and she made me push him out on my own b/c I wasn’t having a contraction at that time. I got him out and he was limp and not breathing so they had dh cut his cord right away and got him on oxygen and he started crying shortly after. Dhimitrios Josiah was born at 11:49 pm.

It was so cool not to have anything hooked up to me- they checked ds’s heart beat every 30 minutes or so with a doppler and then when I was pushing the nurse would check it with every push, that’s how they knew ds had to come out quickly b/c his HB dropped so low.

I did tear pretty bad, but the midwife thinks it was b/c I have 2 scars from a previous epi and a previous tear.

No kidding! "I know you have the sniffles today, but if I could take a final exam when in labor with you, you can go to school with a cold!"
