Peewww: Petroleum-smelling furniture

I just bought a credenza (which is perfect for my paper habit ) but it smells awful. It's basically a cheap piece that I had to put together, so it wouldn't be an easy return (& I like its function & haven't found anything that fits so well behind the couch). But it reeks of a strong petroleum smell. I was wondering what I could do to get rid of this off-gassing odor. I've opened up windows, but it's in either the paint or wood. What would you suggest I could do?

If it's a cheap piece, chances are that it's made of particle board. Other than allowing it to air out or taking it back, there's nothing you can really do about it.
