Recycling is confusing

I am trying really hard to do this thing. First I have alot of things in my kitchen that I believe can be recycled. I had call around looking for one then they told me that my apt. complex is responsible for it contact them a week and a half ago and just saw the 2 recycling bins came outside today (from allied waste). Problem is one says newspaper only(I don't ever have them) and the next says some word beginning with 'C' which from the picture looks like bottles(I guess plastic and glass?), cans stuff. So I am still where I am, what about regular paper, envelopes cardboards do I have to find another company in the area, get a bin and drive to them? This is starting to be very frustrating, I want my kitchen somewhat 'thrash free' DS is now digging in what I think is 'recyclable'. Any help. I want to do this, but it is confusing just knowing what I can recycle and where to take it.

Our phone book has, in the Yellow Pages near the back of the book, a list of recycling centers in the area and which items they take. The area of town I live in doesn't have curbside, so I do drive all my recycling to the center. We usually haul it there every other week. We recycle like mad, so we have to go that often. It's only a 15 minute drive though.

I would call Allied Waste (who put out the dumpsters) and ask exactly what they accept in your dumpster (they should be able to mail you something, like a flyer, too). You coud even post it in the common areas of your apt complex so others know, too.

Then, you can ask them where in your area to take all the other stuff they don't take.

Hope this helps! Congrats on making the switch! :

Definitely call Allied Waste and ask for a printed brochure explaining what can be recycled and how to sort it!

For other recyclables that AW doesn't collect, you could look for your county's waste management website and see what it says about community recycling centers.

You will have to call, but it sounds like you have 2 bins and don't have to sort. It sounds like you put paper, newspaper, cardboard in the one bin, and cans, glass and plastic in the other.

For use, we have one small green bin, then we seperate everything.

You will have to find out what they don't accept. Thin cardboard (cereal boxes) is not accepted here, only corrogated. We only do plastic 1 and 2. That includes water bottles, milk jugs, condiment containers such as honey, some shampoo containers, strawberry containers, vinegar bottles. Mostly clear plastic. The thicker stuff is not recyclable here.

I was frustrated at first too, but once I got the hang of it, it became second nature.

I just take mine into the city recycling center...because our trash services do not pick up (and I can not say that I would trust them to actually recycle it anyway)

My recycling center gives out a card that tells what they take and how they want it.

I can not help you much with that word....are you sure it is not just in a different language....lol

LOL...I was wondering too, I think I spelled it really wrong. I just knew to began with a 'C' had a 'm' and a 'ing' I am going to remove it and check it out again. I will just go to dictionary.com.

Thanks everyone, I will call. I also see a Recycling center close to where I drop DH to catch the metro. So if these people only accept a few things I will be contacting the other one.

The word is probably "commingle" or "commingling". It means the bin is for all your plastics, metal and glass.
