alternative to purell?

Thread Starter
we use purell sometimes to clean my 2yo's hands before snacks. is there something more 'natural' to use that will still kill germs? also another question...we are trying to switch over to 'green' cleaning products but are they ok to clean something like chicken juice on the counter? will they still kill germs and bacteria if they don't say anitbacterial?
thanks..

I subscribe to the belief that killing all bacteria is bad. A good handwashing with some regular soap and warm water is plenty for just about any purpose.

:

As for cleaning we use straight vinegar and straight hydrogen peroxide. For scrubbing I use baking soda, that's it!

You can pick this up at WHole Foods usually - close to the check out stands.

Us too....except that I do use Dr. Bronner's on occasion.

We found Purell to be just be a hassle to remember to carry around. And even when I did have it, I never remembered to use it.

We use soap and water and for dirty fingers while out and about I use a damp wipe.

I'm not a fan of antibacterial anything, except for antbiotic ointment on serious cuts.

I would clean the 2yo's hands at the sink with soap and water, or with a damp washcloth (with either plain water or a mild soap solution.) I'd rather my kids eat germs than eat chemicals in purell or equivilent.

Burt's Bees makes one with witch hazel in it.

we use the clean well stuff, I actually found it at Target. I prefer to just have them wash their hands, but there seems to be lots of times when a sink is not available LOL

ITA, but there are times when we can't get to soap and water. This one is awesome. EO Hand Sanitizer. It organic and it comes in lavender, lemon or unscented. My kids love the lemon.

If you are in on local or mdc Frontier co-op, you can get them at a great price.

We use this too. But just make sure not to use it when your kids' hands are really dry/cracked or have an open wound because the alcohol STINGS then!

Most definitely. They don't really like that.

This is what we use while we're out and about, because I don't care to use the chemically laden soap in public restrooms.

But at home, we just use soap and water.

Good point. Those soaps always scare me. And a lot of them are antibacterial now, too.

A little off topic, but I got PO'd that my chiro's office had antibacterial soap in the bathroom. I gave him a lecture about it but he didn't budge.

You can also make an alternative with alchohol, glycerin and thyme oil plus an essentional oil to scent as you like. It's pretty easy to find recipes on line.

We use just soap and water at home for hand washing and I carry Burt's Bees hand sanitizer for travel and public restrooms. For kitchen cleaning we use a mix of vinegar, a squirt of Dr. Bronners soap, and a few drops of tea tree oil. TTO is great!!! Naturally antiseptic. A good book we've used to get started with homemade cleansers and such is Clean House, Clean Planet.
