All I know is that we made some big stride every day we went to the chiro. He nursed right after the 3rd appt without a nipple shield or anything. I was completely amazed. The chiro really helped to open up his mouth wide and limber up the mouth, jaw and neck muscles.

The day after that appt, I gave him 1/2 a bottle to take the edge off his hunger, then, offered the breast. It worked, though he was a little frustrated with the slower flow of my breast as opposed to the bottle. For the rest of the day, any time he stirred even slightly, I had my breast ready to go. In this short two days, he's coordinating his sucking almost perfectly and he's latching on in only 2 or 3 attempts. I know he'll keep getting stronger and more adept. And no more bottles, nipple shields or SNS!

Good luck!

How did you find the chiro? I've only used chiro once myself and am nervous about using it with a baby. I've never used CST and am skeptical.

My mw recommended her. I've always been sort of skeptical of chiropractic in general. In desperation, we took our other dc to a chiro who did allergy treatments. It didn't work and it was all very hokey to me, so I was not overly confident going in this time. However, CST is/seems very hands-on, not some "energy" type modality that I find hard to believe. She massaged the inside of ds's mouth to "release" her palette (probably similar to suck training, but whatever she did took a very short amount of time). This was done with a gloved finger that ds sucked on. Then, she did some massage type things on ds's head (near his temples) and then, on his jaw and neck. She used this clicker type instrument on his spine and sacrum which is supposed to "stimulate the nervous system." Not sure about that part, but like I said, it worked. Ds began opening his mouth wide and sticking his tongue far out of his mouth. He did NONE of that before. She didn't do any traditional chiro stuff on him, no cracking or jarring movements. She was extremely gentle. Each visit took about 10 or 15 minutes. She does lots of families and children. If you decide to try one, I'm sure you could get a referral from a mw or someone in the birth/breastfeeding community near you.

Thanks! I am trying to find someone locally who can recommend a practitioner...I actually live in a pretty crunchy town but so far no one knows of anyone in particular. I may just have to cold call.
