Some of you may remember I had trouble distinguishing if I was peeing myself or if my water broke last Wednesday.
Well, like many of you replied...it was definitely not pee!
Eion Jacob was born by cesarean delivery on Wednesday, May 7, 2008. He weighed 7lbs 12 oz., is 20 inches long and has bright blonde hair (a surprise!).
We waited another 6 hours after the original 4 that my water was breaking and I didn't know it. After that my midwife advised me to go the c-section route. It was not at all what I wanted, but I hadn't dilated at all past the original 2 cm that I had dilated throughout my pregnancy...plus, even with thinking about contractions as expansions and walking and getting into labor promoting positions, my "expansions" were still barely doing anything and were few and far between (1 every half hour or so, still able to talk through them, still able to walk and drive and everything!). My midwife says his butt just wasn't engaged enough to promote labor to begin. So technically it was just PROM.
The c-delivery wasn't that bad. I would not opt to do it again, but that has more to do with the fact that recovery is a b*tch. I watched the procedure in the lights above me and although some parts definitely did not look pretty I got to see my baby come out. I saw his back first and started crying immediately. He entered the world kicking and squealing his little blond head off!! My midwife asked the doctor not to cut the cord right away, and he complied so Eion got more of his placenta-blood than is usual with a c-section and we also avoided all of the other "horrors" of hospital delivery. Then they brought him around the curtain and he was pink and healthy. He was with us in the recovery room within 15 minutes. Just enough time to get me stitched up and rolled out of the OR. My husband stayed with him the entire time.
The whole thing was really quick. Including my stay in the hospital (2 DAYS!). I'm on strict orders not to do anything but they let me come home. My stitches are healing well, baby is healthy. Official prognosis of why he stayed breech and never dropped: short cord. I don't know how that would have effected our plans for homebirth, but in all honesty I think that we did the right thing. Since after 10 hours my labor had not progressed at all I think I may have been too tired to deliver a breech baby as quickly and carefully as we would have had to. I wish my son could have had a natural delivery...but I've been keeping it in mind that for the 38 weeks before he was born, and for the rest of his life I will be doing my best for him...that i will not be able to control all situations...this was one of those situations and I should make the best of it.
I love him!!!
Oh and G was awesome! Once all was settled he came home and did all the dishes and vaccuumed so that I wouldn't feel compelled to do it all when I got home. He's started skin to skin bonding with Eion too!
Oh yeah, and Eion is already eating like a champ (breastfeeding is working out fine!). My milk hasn't come in yet, but he suckles and swallows well.
We couldn't be prouder parents!
pictures soon!
