I was in walmart today shopping with my 3 children my friend and her 5 month old baby.her baby started to cry so she started nursing her.We were walking through the eisles and a asst manager approached us and told my friend that she couldnt feed her baby in walmart uless she was covered up.My friend grew silent and started to tear up and started to take her daughter off her breast and I told he no do not stop feeding her.I then turned to the manager and told her the florida law on breastfeeding. She told me I dont care I have to look out for my other customers cause they are uncomfortable with you feeding your child.I explained to her that It was a necessity and that she was breaking a law and that she should educate the customers on the law and explain to them how a mother is allowed to breastfeed in public with or without covering. And she still argued with me.So we left and we wrote a statement to walmart and we called them.My friend works at a home daycare and two of the children she watches are the children of an attorney. So she called her and she told her what happend and she is taking her case.My friend is so upset she was embarrassed and harassed.as soon as we left she broke down crying cause she felt so humiliated. She is trying to do a wonderful thing for her daughter and here she is being degraded for it.I mean if you say the ladies face she looked like she was disgusted. She wasnt nice about it at all,but in the end she said she has fed 5 of her children but you should walk around covered. All my friend wants from all this is to make sure it doesnt happen to anyone else in a walmart store. And that their employees are educated in this matter. She doesnt want anyone to feel the feeling she felt today and she will do everything in her power to make sure it will never happen to another women in walmart. She has hired an attorney and thye are working on it right now. They are trying to get the surveilance video and on monday they will have a press conferance

Poor thing! I've never had a problem in a FL store with nursing, but I'm not entirely surprised at the attitude. I too would like to know where....

Please have her post a discrimination report at http://www.firstright.org/reportdiscrimination

This is the group that came out of the Applebee's nurse-in and is trying to unite BF advocates to help make change in an positive, organized way.

I think it is especially important that any case begin brought legally against a discriminator (and as large as Walmart( should be well organized. The way it has been going with Walmart, it could become class-action.

Thanks!

You are an amazing friend. Poor woman! I feel bad that she started crying. I think that would be me if I were by myself. I wish so much that I'd be able to say, "Actually no the law says..." but I get so easily flustered and I would probably just end up crying. Ugh. Good job, both of you. I hope something comes of this!

Her attorney should contact Florida Today. They love stories like this.

Good luck to her with the case.

I'd be very interested in hearing the outcome...

I hope your friend takes some kind of legal action against that store manager. I nurse my 8 month old at wal-marts in Volusia county regularly and have NEVER had anyone do/say anything but smile at me or say something about how busy I look. lol. Im so sorry that happened to you and her.

Let's get all the nursing Fl gals together and have a nurse-in at this wal-mart!

so glad I refuse to shop there...

too bad I am too far from Brevard, but I would've love to gather in front of their store with a sign! Specially now that I am pregnant!

Reading stories like this makes me so sad. I'm glad you were with your friend while she had to deal with the manager's crap. I am terrified that someone will harass me in public. Thankfully no one has.

Goodness, I live there, and my best friend, a nursing mother works there as well. She would be outraged to hear this!!!!!!
If you want any help at all, please let me know

I hate Walmart. We don't shop there at all. I was told I need to go nurse my 12 year old (she was 6 months at the time) in my car or the bathroom. Heh. Yeah. I was 19 and had a really big mouth and kinda told them to f-off. I wasn't going anywhere. Not my finest moment I admit. Got the point across and they left me alone!!:
