Where Should A Laundry Room Be ? - Page 3

I've always wanted a laundry room with a window or sorts, kinda like a door and a pully clothesline so I could open the 'window' and stand right at the washer, turn around, hang clothes and pully them outside. clothes the window and be done until they dried, would be nice for those really cold days

because we line dry I would say downstairs, and close to an outside door, even if we had a dryer would still want it near an exit because I would hope we would still line dry some of our clothes even with the dryer.

Exactly! I'm a little surprised that so many people want a laundry setup that makes line drying almost impossible.

Ooh, definitely! We have an open staircase, so we just toss our laundry from the second floor down to the first floor, gather it up, and toss it in the downstairs hamper. Totally tacky, but it works.

Our "laundry room" is a closet in the kitchen, so my laundry is always out for company to see. Some day, I hope to have an actual separate room for doing the laundry, so my dining room table doesn't get covered with clean laundry every few days.

That would be so cool! Sorta like all the clotheslines you used to see hanging between apartment buildings in cities.

It really depends, as you can see from the responses. Our new (rental) house has the w/d stacked in the upstairs master bath and I'm looking forward to it immensely (we've been going to a laundromat, ugh).

Just don't put it in the basement! Worst. Place. Ever.

When we moved to our house the washer was in the kitchen and the dryer in a musty old basement. Charming. We replumbed and put a stackable HE wash/dryer in our family room, with a huge laundry closet and a built-in table to fold laundry. I am hoping for a soaking tub as well. BUT, I really wish for a compact setup for my mudroom so that everyone can strip their muddy wet outdoor clothes and I can throw them in the wash. Right now we're working on getting an outdoor shower so at least some of the mud stays outside!

I line dry as much as I can, while I would love to have the laundry room more convenient by the bedrooms, downstairs in the pantry area is the easiest for hanging clthes out

I say in the basement or first floor. Washers break sometimes and there is nothing like having to replace a ceiling because your washer broke on the floor above! It's happened to a couple of people that I know.

Think of it as good exercise to carry the laundry up and down the stairs if you have a multiple story house!

Mine is off of the family room which is great because I can watch a DVD while folding, hanging, ironing, etc.

Although, it's also 2 floors down from the bedrooms, not to mention on the other side of the house. So... lots of walking and stairs. It's good exercise, I suppose

Ours is currently in our old, dark, damp basement. Ideally for me, would be in a mudroom by the back door. But that would require adding onto our home! I don't think I would like one upstairs/by bedrooms b/c my DH gets dirty at work, comes in the back door, and the clothes come off in the basement. Also I hang out my clothes as much as possible, and if they were by the door that would be great!

We are designing a house and I want the laundry connected to the kitchen and the mudroom and I want it to include a small shower for hosing down after playing in the mud or down by the lake. I also want a laundry chute for dropping down clothes from upstairs. For our lifestyle that is the most practical. I also only do laundry at night because we have cheaper electricity then (2 cents/KW vs. 12 cents) and I don't want to hear the washer or drier running when we are sleeping. I also want to wean off the drier and plan to have a door from the laundry out to a laundry hanging space that will be open air but covered with a roof so I don't have to worry about late afternoon thunderstorms. And that is MY dream but yours might be a little different.

Ideally I want it upstairs where the bedrooms are and with a window that opens to a line w/a pulley outside to line dry.

Haven't read the other replies, but I *dream* of having my laundry and *all* of the family's clothing in one room -- a family closet. With easy access to a basement or outdoor clothesline of course .

I loved the way my parents did it growing up with a handful of kids.

We had a laundry chute where all the bedrooms were. That ended up in the basement in the laundry room We each had a rack for hanging clothes and baskets underneath for the rest. You could dress in the basement or it made it really easy to carry your stuff upstairs since each person had a designated area.

The only thing missing would have been a clothesline and bars on the walls to hang other stuff.

I prefer a laundramat though. I spend a couple of hours every couple weeks getting my laundry washed, dried and folded in one shot. I come home, and it takes no time to put it away since it's all sorted and washed. It's much more efficient for me--no more forgetting a load and having to rewash, no piles of clothes everywhere, no convenience washing, I pay attention to how much I wear and wash, I make every load count (there are three sizes of washers). I used to spend so much time washing clothes and then dealing with piles of unfolded laundry all over. I have a three bag thing in my closet, take off my clothes and toss them in the correct bag, carry those to the laundramat, wash the entire bag and all the clothes, put the folded clothes back in and carry them back home. It's great.
