On a toe up sock can I change....

what half is the top?

I'm doing a toe up sock and am really liking the way the colors are pooling on what should be the bottom of the foot. I want to flip it though and make it the top. Once I get to my heel can I pretend that it is indeed the top and just go from there? It seems to me I can but I just want to be sure.

Yep.

The sock pattern I mainly use has you decide which "side" is the top just before the gussets, based on which side you like better.

Of course, if you've been doing a lace instep and a plain bottom, switching won't work

No I don't suppose it would.

I did end up flipping and just got done with my first short row heel!! I've done Wendy patterns before but those have such a different construction. I'm excited to see how it fits now. I think I did it right..I do have a couple bad spots but that was me and not the pattern.

: What pattern are you using? I am getting ready (maybe!) to attempt a short-row heel again, after thousands (literally) of top-down socks and only two or three pretty lousy toe-up attempts.

It was this one here

I changed my mind though and ended up doing just a plain stockinette one. I've had so many issues with the heel though. I'm on attempt three. Apparently I need to start mine at 1 inch short of final length. :

One tip I've learned (the hard way) is to work the heel on scrap yarn before you start the sock, to see how big it really is. I just cast on the number of stitches for the heel and follow the directions, and then measure to see how deep the final heel is - saves a lot of time and headache when you work the real sock

Good to know! This is the first time I've done a real short row with nothing extra to it heel. I've done Wendy's patterns but those are just so lovely and different. I think I may go back to them. That said I have learned quite a bit about my feet and sock construction since having to frog the heel so many stupid times.

What works for me with a short row heel is to draw around my foot onto my paper pattern. I then measure a line 2" short of the heel on the tracing, and when the toe is at my toes and the needles are at the line, I start working the heel. Works beautifully, because it's so hard to draw around a body part properly.

Ahh but my problem is my heel was only coming in at 1 inch! I finally got it though and it worked great....I'm a convert.
