Short row heel help! Quickly please so I don't have to stop knitting :)

Ok I just finished up my first one and did 5 rounds of plain stockinette before trying it on. It looks just like the picture and I started it at a little less then 2 inches short of foot length. I tried it on though and it doesn't even come past the ball of my heel! Did I do something wrong? I knit exactly according to pattern. Is that how it's supposed to fit? Does the rest of my heel appear as I keep knitting? I'm so used to heel flaps so when I'm done with the heel portion I have a heel. I can try it on and it comes down the back of the ankle and then curves around the ball. Do short row ones not work like that?

ETA: OK I don't know how to measure. It's a tad more than 2 inches short of my total foot length. Not a lot though. Even at an exact 2 inches I don't see this thing going all the way over the ball. Should I frog it and start it at less than 2 inches?

My thoughts...

I find the 2" less than total foot length to work the best for my for me, I did 1.5" on a stockinette sock and it was too big. That number is dependant on how deep your heel is going to be and how stretchy the sock is. I'd do the math and make sure that the heel stitches are distributed with 40% of them unwrapped (e.g. 30 st heel - 9 wrapped/12 uwrapped/9wrapped). The other thing to consider is the stitch pattern. I know insteps are usually designed with 10% negative ease, so if you are using cables or something else that has less stretch to it that could be contributing - gauge could also be rearing it's ugly head on this one as well.

What sock are you knitting or are you going to make me stalk you over at Ravelry to find out?

ETA - The diagonal line of worked wrapped stitches should be coming out from corner or just before it...
(ASCII art did not work)
If there is 1/2" difference between where you started your heel and your foot length minus 2", you are probably going to want to frog as the sock would be for a foot a good shoe-size smaller than yours.

I have a thread going on over there all about it.

It started as this (Ravelry link) but decided to just do plain ol' stockinette. I have the same stitch count though my gauge is different (using size 1's instead of 3's since the stitch count happens to be my default on size1's to begin with). I think I just started too soon. :

Yep - always in a rush. I've been working on a pair of Monkey Socks since my 2nd was born and I am literally forcing myself to do two more repeats before I start the cuff and BO - I've been working on it for three months and I really want to have something finished since knitting time is rather sparse.

Oh well, I have to go bake a cake now. Sorry about the frogging, but enjoy the knitting!
