Things that I don't use very often are upsidedown to prevent dust. Things I use every day are right side up to prevent chipping the rim.

Upside down, anything that can catch anything will probably be full of dog hair within an hour or so it seems (at least this time of year)

We only use sturdy rimmed jars and mugs, no think dainty chippable rims here. Although somehow one of my Pyrex dishes has a chip in the rim - no idea how that got there.

BOTH! I can fit more in less space that way! (Would only work with tapered glasses of course.)
