A good book for beginners?

I now have a sewing machine and a nice pile of sheets and other fabric to practice with. Only problem, I don't know what to do. Can anyone tell me what a good book for somebody just starting off would be? I'm thinking bery basic, easy to read and understand. I don't want to get overwhelmed before I even start.
Oh and any suggestions on what to try first? I have made quilts before but they have always been crazy, unmeasured quilts with no pattern or anything.

Thanks!

I love the Reader's Digest Sewing Book and the Vogue one. I've heard good things about Sewing for Dummies. Why don't you check out the craft section at the library and see what they have that appeals to you.

I'll second the Reader's Digest book. Very in depth and I refer back to it often.

I taught myself to sew with my machine, The Idiot's Guide to Sewing and Sewing For Dummies.
