The two gender-neutral sweaters that I have made are
The baby yoda sweater and the five hour baby sweater. I just used neutral colored yarns. The same goes for hats although I don't mind putting a bonnet on a baby boy--to me bonnets are very practical. Have you checked out Knitting Pattern Central. You are bound to find something you like there. I think the key to gender neutral knitting for babies is not too much lace and neutral colors like greens, lighter blues, deeper purples, earth tones, etc . . .

ummm.... isn't any pattern really unisex for a baby? i mean, it's a baby .... gender hasn't really come into play yet, has it? maybe someone could show me a pattern that's really *not* unisex?

I wouldn't put any thing lacey on a boy. The EZ sweater in another post here is a good example of a sweater I don't consider unisex.

again, why not?

we're talking about a newborn, right? isn't a "dress" sort of just a big shirt at that stage in a child's life? it seems like the most practical article of clothing for any baby, to me! and "lacey" doesn't seem any more or les appropriate for a boy or a girl to me.

Well, you could put it all on a boy if you wanted. I wouldn't argue with you. But, I think we can all agree that if you saw a baby in a lacy, frilly dress with mary jane's on, you'd think it was a girl.

I just don't like lacey clothes on boys. Probably weird since ds has long blonde hair and regularly wears pink and purple and sleeps with a hot pink teddy bear. Lace is just the one thing I don't care for. Admittedly, dd didn't wear lacey sweaters as a babe, either.

while you are free to put whatever you want on a baby most people would see a definite difference between something unisex and something girly (or even something overly masculine for a girl).

I just did this one if you did it in another color it could be GN.

Its the Mossy Jacket pattern which is free.

I've made two of those. totally unisex, but you could always switch up the buttons after you know what you're having to make it more suitable for one gender or another. I made buttonholes in both sides, since I don't know what I'm having, and I'll just sew the buttons over the buttonholes I'm not using.
