I have been wanting to switch to mineral makeup for awhile now but just haven't had the funds.. Well, a year ago my husband bought me a gc to a spa which I haven't had the time or interest in going to- but I just learned that they sell Jane Iredale cosmetics... So I was thinking maybe I could just use the gc to by myself some new makeup! I'm wondering if anyone's used this type before what they think.. I've heard it's expensive- does it last awhile? Also, do I need to buy the makeup brushes that they sell or will the generic makeup brushes from the drugstore work?

Thanks!

It IS expensive, but it's wonderful once you get the hang of it.

I haven't used the Jane Iredale brand, but after spending lots of money on Bare Minerals, I decided to make my own.

Last June I spent about $50 on supplies to make it and created a batch. It's just as good as anything you could buy, I still have TONS left a year later, AND I have TONS of ingredients left to make more. With $50 spent, I am probably sitting on about 2.5-3 years worth of foundation and finishing powder!

Where did you buy the supplies? That sounds like a great WAHM idea!

Oh gosh, it's been so long I don't remember, but there are several good places out there and lots of good "recipes" for how to make it. You can find tons of them by googling. Makeuptalk.com has some great threads of resources and recipes and such.

I just did some research on the various ingredients that go into it and what the properties and purposes are for each one and then modified some found recipes for my skin. (I started w/ the list of ingredients off the back of a Bare Minerals package)

It was super easy!

Oh, I forgot the brush question from the OP. Brushes that are more short and dense tend to work better than the standard cosmetic brushes. The looser the bristles, the less coverage you get.

If you have a coffee bean grinder it goes really fast mixing the base. The hardest part for me was adding the pigment b/c you have to literally add a grain at a time and blend it well to be sure you don't over do it. The real depth of pigmentation doesn't come out until it's super blended so you have to be careful.

AVON sells mineral makeup now (for MUCH less than the other brands). You can check the ingredients on their site if you want to make sure it's what you want. And Avon does NOT test on animals.

I finally found the name of where I bought my ingredients!

There were lots of places out there to get them, but I found this store to have the best pricing overall!

I use Everyday Minerals. They have a free sample kit (you pay shipping) and their stuff lasts for a long time. I really like it!
