Shatavari dosage? Share your experience?

What's the appropriate dosage for Shatavari?

The bottle says 1-2x2 per day and I think I've read elsewhere that it can been taken as you'd take dom. or Reglan (3x3 or 4x4).

I know with fenugreek it says 2x2-4, but most do at least 3x3, so is Shatavari similar in that you generally take more than the bottle says in order to see results with lactation?

Anyone care to share their Shatavari experience?

I'm taking 2 pills twice a day, but I'm still pregnant. I may up the dosage (probably to 2 pills three times a day) once the baby comes if I need to. For now, I'm definitely noticing an increase in breast size and my ability to express colostrum.

I don't know that there's a whole lot of info on what's safe as far as dosaging.. a lot of the info out there seems just anecdotal. But maybe start off following the 2 pills twice a day and if you need to up it after a week or two, do it slowly.

What is your brand / dosage? Here's a link to some good info:

I have the Swanson Superior Herbs brand. They're 500mg capsules. The instructions say "take one capsule one to two times per day with water."

I ask about taking more than that because when I was on fenugreek I was taking the Solaray brand 620mg caps. 4x4 when the brand instructions said 2x2-4. So I was taking significantly more than the enclosed instructions recommended.

I'm assuming that the suggested dosage is as a "dietary supplement" designed to reap fenugreek's other benefits. The general dosage for it to boost lactation was 3000mg-6000mg which is quite a bit more than the dosage as a dietary supplement.

It makes sense to me then that you would need to take more Shatavari than the recommended dosage in order to get the lactation benefits.

If I'm way off on this, let me know. The lowmilksupply.org site was the only one that I'd found dosage in relation to lactation. They're still only recommending 2x2, or 2000mg.

I think it's really hard to tell with herbs like this, that don't have a standardized dosage. That's one of the down sides of unregulated herbs. Are you not seeing any results? How long have you been on it?

The recommended maximum dosage is 2000mg per day (4 500mg pills or 2x2). I read somewhere else that the max is 4500mg BUT that was an unverified, random site I found on the web.

NOTE: MAX DOSES OF SHATAVARI AND DOMPERIDONE SHOULD NEVER BE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME (per Diana West).

I took the tincture, but when my dose was too high, my ankles and calves hurt. They felt like there was fluid in them, so then I eased up on my dose. I took a dropper 2-3 times a day.

Where did you get a tincture?

I got it at a local health food store, but it is made by www.herb-pharm.com and you can order directly from there.

The dosage for most herbs are sensitive to weight and so a blanket dosage isn't quite the same for everyone. So when I talk to people about shatavari I tell them to start at the directed dosage to see how your body responds and then take more, upping the dosage until your legs hurt and then ease back until they don't hurt anymore. But that is for people who have serious supply issues due to PCOS or IGT. It seems like we need an extra high dose just to have a mediocre supply.

But all of this is just my opinion and you should do what you feel is best.
