What sort of vitamins, supplements etc. should one have on hand in case of an infection from measles, whooping cough etc.? I would like to know what to give and what to have on hand in case. Also, how do you know how much to give? Thanks!

SA is good to have on hand for any illness really. I think the dose is 250mg / kg body weight but that is just from memory.
I am also going to make my own cough syrup once DS is a little older. Gitti posted this link

I also have a book by Aviva Jill Romm that has some herbal remedies. I have a few tinctures made that I can mix together when needed. I am working on some more but right now I have lavender, catnip, blue vervain, valarien root, rosemary, chamomile, and lemon balm.

We have various expectorants that get thrown out when they expire...often untouched. We have GSE for ear infections, children's natural vitamins, tylenol (not an herb, but still)
I make saline solution with 1 cup warm water and 1/2 tsp sea salt and use a dropper to put into the nose and the sucker to pull it out and then repeat on other side. My children are always more receptive to the warm water solution that I make than the cold drops that I used to buy.
Mostly, I try to get them to eat and drink well. If they get sick and I don't have a solution, I call my naturapath or head to the local healthfood store where there's a naturapath.
We did no meds at all for the chicken pox and would most likely do the same with measles, mumps or rubella.
We also avoid milk and drink soymilk/hazelnut/almond milk instead. This has cut down on mucous problems, snoring, colds and ear infections.
We also have an inhaler type thingy that we got in France. It's a bowl with a face cup on top. We put in boiling water and an herbal tablet that fizzes and lets off a really healing smell.

Sodium Ascorbate in case of Pertussis
I give ds1 Cod Liver oil everyday (1-2 tsp) just for general wellness (Omega-3s, Vit A, Vit D) Even mainstream medical literature on the CDC website acknowledges that kids who are Vit A deficient are the ones who have serious complications with measles.
Probiotics- I also give ds1 probiotics everyday to keep his gut flora healthy (he has never had any stomach problems of any sort)
A homeopathic lymph tonifier that I got from my naturopath.
Sambucus Tincture for Flu
If we have a nagging cough that interferes with sleep I make my grandma's cough medicine- lemon juice, honey, and whiskey.
Olive leaf extract for viruses that I feel we need a little extra something to get over.
Peroxide and Tea Tree Oil for cuts, wounds, etc.
Arnica for bruises and minor swelling.

Children's Multi-Vitamin (rainbow light)
Sambucol
Echinacea/Astragalus tincture
Herbs for Kids TempAssure tincture (don't think I've ever needed this)
SA
CLO (Carlson makes a lemon flavor the kids actually beg for!)
A blend of TTO/Lavender EO worked really well on CP spots. Almost no itching and they healed beautifully.
Arnica - oral and topical
Plantain for stings/bites
Chamomile for teething

Vitamin C 500 mg or better<---got vitamin C candies too!!! all kinds of C
Vitamin B
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
Muti-vitamins
ALL FOOD BASED VITAMINS
Kyolic
Apple-cider Vineger capsules
Probiotics
Califlora Gel (aloe -homeo pathic gel) BEST STUFF EVER
Hydrogen Peroxide
Iodine
Tea Tree Oil
Neem Oil
Sea salt
Apple Cider Vineger
I have at least 15-20 different homeopathic remedies to use for the family and the animals <--- all for different purposes, some work better for one person and don't for another....have to really learn a little about homeopathy to get a good results
Ferrum Phosphoricum is a must
I have herbal pain relievers(never take asprin)
have many herbs in natural form, capsule form, and tincture
If you venture into herbs and you take more than one or use pharmecuticals i cannot stress the importance of getting a book about interactions and contradictions and READING IT.
Nutrition has it's place in all this...if you don't eat right and excercise...you will have a hard time no matter what you try and heal yourself with.
