In response to the "Awful Awful Children's Books thread", I was wondering what books you all just love to read and to read to your children.

(and the title is supposed to be Wonderfully. I can't type)

Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever
This was my favorite when I was a kid. I got a copy for my niece and nephew. The pictures are adorable, and there's even a version of The old woman who lived in the shoe that omits the baby whipping.
I do remember my mom refusing to readme "Fi fi fo fum" and some others, but for the most part everything is totally fun and adorable.
I also really love the Todd Parr books, so sweet.
Streganona (LOVE!!!!) and the other books about Streganona.
Chicken Soup With Rice by Maurice Sendak (who's name I may have just butchered) was another childhood favorite of mine
I've never actually read any of the Little Bear books, but I have to admit that I really liked the TV adaption, so if the books are similar, I would defintiely recommend them.
I know they're mentioned a lot in the "awful" thread, but I really like the Whinnie the Pooh storeis too, and The Giving Tree and Where the sidewalk Ends
Chick Chicka Boom Boom
And I'm wondering if anyone knows what book I'm talking about here, I remember it being one of my favorites when I was younger, it was about these sisters, all different ages and I think it waskind of oldfashioned, and they liked going to play in the meadow. Sorry if that's not to discriptive, I think the word "Meadow" was in the title, anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

Anyway, I love childrens books. That's one of the things I'm most excited about when it comes to having Children.

I LOVE Snoozers, and the song by the Bacon Brothers rocks as well.

Every single thing written by Cynthia Rylant especially *Mr Putter & Tabby* series and *Cobblestone Cousins* series. They are truly sublime.

Shirley Hughes is absolutely wonderful too. A favorite is *Dogger*, must have read it a hundred times.

*The Red Ripe Strawberry, the Little Mouse & The Big Hungry Bear* perfect toddler book.

*Miss Rumphius*

*Strega Nona*

*Beware of Boys*

I will look at the book shelf for more ideas, it has been awhile since I had a little one clamoring to get in my lap and be read to.

The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey. Almost all books by Ezra Jack Keats. The Monster at the End of This Book. (I really try to avoid books w/ TV characters, but this one is too fun.) The Tailypo by Joanna C. Galdone. That's all I can think of right now. I know I'm forgetting some of my faves, though.

The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog - Mo Willems. When my dd was in K, we had to read this book every single night at least 3x. She thought it was just hilarious. We like all of Mo, but this was her absolutely fav.

Now she is 8 and reads just about anything. I am finding that mostly nonfiction is what holding her attention now.

Just about anything by Dr. Seuss, Russell Hoban, Margaret Wise Brown, or Beatrix Potter.

And for older kids, I'll put in a plug for the wonderful Moomintroll books by Tove Jansson.

When I was young I used to LOVE the Enid Blyton books. She wrote many books, but I vividly remember the Faraway Tree Series and the Famous Five too.

My kiddos love books too, which I am so glad of! They will read pretty much anything, their favs rotate.

Jazz Baby, by Lisa Wheeler.

We have it out from the library and I just ordered it from Amazon, since everyone in the fam loves it so much. It's a simple story about a family dancing and singing together. I like it because the baby is right in the middle of all the action, getting passed around and dancing with everyone. It's such a nice family story. Plus, lots of good sound effects to entertain DS. He likes it at age 2, and I imagine he would have liked it at a much younger age too.

Oooh--great thread! A lot of our favorites have already been mentioned here, but I will add anything by Kevin Henkes. We especially like Kitten's First Full Moon, Weekend with Wendell, and Lily's Purple Plastic Purse.

Also anything by James Marshall makes our whole family laugh out loud. George and Martha and The Cut-ups are favorites around here.

Shel Silverstein books. A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree, Falling Up.

"Listen to the Mustn'ts"

Listen to Mustn'ts, child, listen to the Don'ts.
Listen to the Shouldn'ts, the Impossibles, the Won'ts.
Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

Makes me cry every time.

We buy most of our books second-hand and I bought DD a copy of WTSE that has an inscription where a parent tells her child she's buying them this book because it's being banned in schools and people feel it's so controversial, etc. She goes on to say that she wants them to decide for themselves and be strong in their choices. I thought it was such an amazing thing to say to a young child, so empowering. Even though that copy was more expensive than others in the store, I ended up buying it and showing DD. We had a great talk that night.

I'm a Blyton fan too. I buy her books whenever I can find them; they're hard to come by in the US. I especially enjoy her school stories: Malory Towers, St. Clares, and so on.

Everywhere Babies is one of my favorite picture books.
