I can answer this now for both of my babies.

With DS (born 2 years ago), my OB broke my bag of water once I hit 10 cm and right before I started pushing.

With DD (born 2 weeks ago), I broke the bag myself and I pushed, right before her head crowned.

Yup, it just broke.

For ds #1 it broke in the tub during labor, and for ds#2 it broke before labor.

Yay! My turn! My MWs broke my water 38 hours into labor to see if it would help kick-start my dilation, so I'm a definite no on that one.
