Hi everyone,

I tried homeschooling for 1/2 of the year last year and it wasn't such a great fit for us.

Now, my children are behind in math. Not because of homeschooling, of course.

I hope that someone can give me suggestions on the best way to work with my son--using our time the most effectively, to bring him up to speed.

I've looked at tutoring and it's so expensive! Plus, I know all of this math and can teach, but it's helping him to know that he knows it, too.

I'd appreciate your input!

So are your kids going back to school? It sounds like maybe they are. I'm not sure how to bring them up to speed b/c I think most of the homeschoolers on here don't go by what the school says so in essence their kids couldn't be behind and the need to catch them up wouldn't apply.
Maybe call the school they will be attending and seei f they have any suggestions.

You could find a math website to let them work on while at home and on weekends. There are also lots of great workbooks you can buy or software. Here are some links to math sites:

I also agree with talking to their teachers individually. Maybe they can offer some insight on what you can be doing with them at home. Good luck!

Not cheap, but mathusee.com It's what we're considering.

I would also get a really good grasp on what the school wants. In my area it is not only about finding the answer - but showing and writing about how one got the answer. Word problems are often highly focused on.

I would thoroughly persue the workbooks from school they use, and see what it focuses on. Find a curriculum (or create one!) to supplement that re-enforces what is expected of them.

Good luck!
