Which would you recommend? name brands? I see that there is a huge sale going on right now with janome machines at the local sewing shop (like $600 off!)... have any of you tried the 1100DX or the 1200D?

I'm wanting a serger that I can use to start up a at home sewing business. Any that are best or worse for that (heavy useage..)

Janome's have a good rep. Check out Patternreview. I think you'll be happy though and you'll have dealer support

thanks! I think I was already on patternreview. My mom rec. it. There wasn't much info on those machines I mentioned on there.

I know alot of people love the brother 1034 too. I think it's a matter of how much you want to spend (you didn't mention your budget) and what features you want on the machine

I'm hoping for something under 1000$... But I want one that can handle a lot of use and isn't finicky about the tension or threading etc. I still have a lot of research to do, but I really appreciate any input that anyone wants to offer.

I might consider the babylock then, that jet air threading is nice!

do they all have jet air threading? babylock, I mean.

Right now, I'm thinking of buying local because then I can bring it in to get serviced and all that jazz. But the prices online are so much cheaper! It's a tough decision for sure.

I tried out all the sergers I could find locally (Bernina, Pfaff, Janome, and Husqvarna-Viking.) THe Huskylock (Husqvarna) was hands down the best one I tried. I have a Huskylock 905.

cool! my mom used to be a husqy dealer I think I would love to get one of those, but I don't think there is a local dealer here. I could be wrong. How did you find your husqy?

I want to have a local dealer so that I can get it repaired if/when it needs it, at no cost (under a warrantee , I hope comes with all of the machines)

My Brother 1034 is a work horse! The only complaint is it doesn't do rolled hems on silk very easy.

yk, the dealer I talked with today said he has a 905. SO have you had any trouble with it? He said it's on sale for $699 right now (canadian $$, BTW) How much did you pay for yours?

I also have a Huskylock, the 901 model... I've only had it for a couple of weeks though.

I can't remember how much I paid for it. I think it was like $500, but it was over 4 years ago. ANd no problems ever with it. I've probably made over a hundred diapers on it. I brought some thick scraps to test on the sergers I tried since I wanted it for making diapers, and it was the only one that zipped through them just as easily as a single layer. And it finishes the edges on a single layer thin woven just as easily as it goes through thick layers (you have to adjust the tensions and feeds, of course.)
