Alternative fabric for playsilks?

I love the idea of playsilks, but I don't use silk. Is there another fabric that I could still dye that would work well as a substitute? Is there a very lightweight cotton fabric that could work? I'm not sure where to go with this, or if it is possible.

Thanks!

We had cotton "silks" at the Waldorf group we used to go to. It was very gauzy, though not as flimsy as cheese cloth. I'd go poke around the utility fabrics at the store - canvas, muslin, etc., until you find a weight you like. Bring it home and wash it in really hot water a few times to soften it up and shrink it as much as it will shrink. Have fun!

You could use cotton voile or batiste. They are very lightweight though not as much as cotton gauze. Also, pre-hemmed rayon sarong blanks would work well too.
