Really bad situation turned in to a lovely moment,

Thought I would share this with all of you....

Background: My brother was burned over 30% of his body several years ago and has to go to the children's hospital often for surgeries to maintain his scar tissue. I always go with the whole family to support him and wait in the waiting room with my mom. Our family has been through a lot the past couple weeks with this surgery and my grandma passed away. So this just gives you an idea of my mental state.

Day of Surgery: Now normally I nurse my 1 year old, where-ever whenever and proudly! However, there we all were, in the packed waiting room in the middle of the hospital in those tiny uncomfy chairs. And when I say packed, there was not a seat empty. Anyway, I start nursing anyway because he was upset and tired. And I hear "I can't believe that she is doing that here, how disgusting, and gross!" I look over and see a woman saying this with her whole family sitting there staring at me in disgust. Normally, one of my brothers would have yelled at her, but there was no one in the waiting room with me at that time. They had all went back to see my brother.

So because of all the stress I have been under, I started bawling. I mean, crying so hard. My DS starts crying, it was awful.

So I run out of the waiting room with DS trying to find a place to nurse. Frantically, all I see is long hallways and more packed waiting rooms. I finally find the locked infant unit and see the secretary sitting there. She asks me "What's wrong sweetie?" And I tell her the whole story! I am crying and telling her "I just need someplace to nurse, I just can't nurse him!"

She gives me the warmest smile. Says "Awww...honey, I have been there." Gives me a huge hug. And takes me to the employee pumping room! It is a small, beautiful room with a huge overstuffed recliner and dim lights. It was like a piece of heaven. DS just nursed and nursed in peace.

As we were leaving I told her "Thank you" and started crying again because of her sweetness. She said "Come back anytime! It is comforting to see nursing mamas!"

I'm so glad that things turned out so nicely for you!

It is hard to believe the gall that some people have.

I'm so glad that nurse was there for you.

And I hope the lady in the waiting room felt like crap after seeing that she made a mama and child cry.

Hope everything went well with your brother's surgery.

I see stories like this, and I can't help but wonder: why are some people so mean when ordinary kindness is so easy and makes things so much better?

I'm so glad that the nurse was so sweet to you. There should be more people like her.

I'm so sorry that woman was so ignorant and rude. But how wonderful that the secretary was so kind. And how nice to know that the hospital has such a peaceful and comfortable place for breastfeeding moms.

Hope everything went well for your brother. I admire you and your family for giving him such support.

For you: :

For the UAV:

Hope life gets a little easier in the coming days. Sounds like you're carrying a lot of weight on your shoulders.

nummies!

The rudeness of people makes me ill.

Awe, what a wonderful nurse.

And mean people suck.

don't even think about the rude woman, at least you got a comfy seat!

yeah, and she was still stuck in that packed waiting room!!

IMO it's people's insecurities that cause them to be so blatantly rude.

One of my favourite quotes: If only closed minds came with closed mouths.

Some people just don't know when to keep their (ignorant) opinions to themselves. I'm sorry she made you sad, it can be hard to defend yourself when you're emotionally exhauseted and ill-prepared. The nurse was right, and hopefully that lady will soon get a clue!

I am sorry you were treated so rudely, but I am really glad everything worked out for you.

That woman isn't worth another thought

I'm so sorry you were treated so BADLY!!!

I'm really glad that the nurse was so sweet and helpful. I hope you're able to get through this tough time quickly.

So glad that secretary was there for you.
Too bad she couldn't go give that UAV a piece of her mind for being such a miserable....UAV.

Wow. How horrible--but how sweet of the nurse! I'm sorry you had to be in that situation, though. *mutters* UAV woman... being rude to ANYONE in a hospital, where it's more than likely he or she is sick, stressed, upset or not wanting to be there... how insensitive!

This reminds me how lucky I am that NZ has a comparatively decent breastfeeding culture. I nursed Rowan all around town today, in shops and on the street and even in a cinema, and didn't even get a weird look.

Thank you all for the kind words and thoughts!

My brother's surgery went great and he is home now. Hopefully this is his last one for awhile!

And yes, I can't believe that someone would be such a UAV. Grrrr....

Thankfully, that sweet nurse was there!

Aw man I started getting tears when I read that & normally internet stuff doesn't make me tear up or cry. That's so wonderful [but boo on that stupid ignorant woman in the first place.]

Yay for a nice person!

Boo for the mean person. When I read stories like this I always end up thinking of how I'd tell the person off. "Ugh, I know it IS disgusting for you to stare at another women's breasts* like that. Don't you have any manners??"

*Not that discreet ogling of a nice rack is wrong, just that this seems like the sort of woman who'd be totally embarrassed to have someone accuse her of leering.
