Gifted 20 yr old wooden playstructure- how to refinish so it is safe?

We are being gifted an appx. 20 yr. old wooden playstructure. (No doubt treated lumber). My dad is going to help us refinish it by powerwashing it and possibly doing some sanding. I was wondering what type of stain/sealer we should use to make it as safe as possible? Does anyone have experience with something like this?

Here's a page that's really a collection of articles on this subject:

Essentially, all standard commercial wood finishes can be considered safe (or as safe as any other) once they have cured. This time of year (humid, where I am anyway) I'd leave a good 30 days for curing.

If it were mine, I might paint it.
