5 hours in the ER today

Rant: We just spent a really nice sunny day in the ER. We suspected ds had a hernia, and he's been horribly fussy lately with gas pains, so I wondered if it was all related. Our doctor told us to go to the ER...5 hours later, they said yes it was a hernia, and that we should just go to the doctor on Monday. Apparently they don't usually do surgery to fix it on babies, and we will likely just have to wait until he's older. If it's causing the fussiness, I can't deal with another couple years of discomfort!

I can't believe it took 5 hours. Everyone there was so inefficient, and I am dreading the bills (they even made us get an ultrasound, and I wasn't quick enough to think to challenge that and see if it was really necessary). I'm so tired of this system--our insurance is crappy AND expensive, they keep rejecting things (like the required newborn screening!), and I have to pay for 2 deliveries (the birth center, where we were for a long while, and the hospital, where he was born on the 3rd day). Argh.

Ugh. Sorry you were there so long. Sucks you have to wait so long to get it fixed but it's good to get a diagnosis.

Hugs to you! Hang in there mama; what a pain though to have to go to the ED only to need to follow up with your peds. ARghhh.

Hugs. Just wanted to say that our dd had one that we didn't even notice until she was nearly one. We moved and found a new ped and he said that in time it would most likely go away. It did. I was so relieved!

Hope the same will happen for you, too!

oh you poor thing! how miserable. they might not be related, though. have you tried the Hyland's Colic Tablets for the gassiness? it doesn't stop the cause of the gas but it does help the baby get rid of it. worked like a charm for DD when she had yeast in her belly and it was causing insane screaming from gas pains.

i totally hear you on the long ER wait. we've been to the ER *twice* in the last 3 months for DS and had a 6 hour wait the first time and a 3 hour wait the second time. the first time he split his head open after he tripped on a toy i'd been begging the kids to pick up. the doc who did the stitches said she could see his skull the cut was so deep! and we were just there last week because DD and DS got a hold of some styrofoam that was in a box with a gift for the baby and DD thought it'd be funny to stick a piece in DS's ear. when he went digging to get it out he pushed it further in, and we couldn't get it out with tweezers because he wouldn't hold still. so off to the ER once again.

Our f/u appointment resulted in a referral to a surgeon...though they probably won't operate for a long time. Too bad in a way, because we've met our maximum (giant) out of pocket expenses for the year, so a surgery would be free if they did it soon!
