Socks!

I am sure that many of you have already come to this revelation, but I have just been so thrilled that I thought I would share.

Just like many people, I have been saving all of those socks that just do not cut it in the drawer anymore. I have been saving them for years and barely ever use them for anything practical, but just can not bring myself to throw them out. I could just fix the hole...but that seems like too much of a hassle. But I have found a practical idea for them......and of course you all are going to say DUH! when I tell you but oh well. I have been using them for cleaning. This is not a new concept by anymeans, I have actually known about it for a long time, but never put it into practice. But I decided to change that.
Here is what I do. In my laundry room I have a shoe box full of socks and other small bits of fabric. I do not cut the socks or anything, I leave them intact. But how I use them eliminates two things that I used to use constantly to clean.
1. my rubber cleaning glove- I would use these daily and would constantly be replacing them.
2. paper towels- I would use these more than dish rags to clean with.

I just put the socks on my hands (like you would on your feet) and I do the the things that I used to do with gloves (unless I am wanting to keep my hands dry, then I still use the rubber ones). And obviously they can be used in place of paper towels as well...Then when I am done with them, I just throw them in the laundry basket and wash them with the other stuff. And I have plenty of them for me to use. This has been so very helpful to me.

It saves money by not having to buy gloves and paper towels as much and it helps keep things out of the landfills! Yippy skippy!

Take it or leave it....

I do that too. I love the way I can get into crevises with a sock on my hand when I'm dusting.

Old socks also make great dog toys. Knot a pair together in the middle and tye it to a length of rope and it's a great chase and tug toy.

I had some marvelous smartwool socks. They aren't all that cheap. I wore out the bottoms of them, but they had this nice knitted pattern on the top that had no wear in them at all. I split the sock by cutting it from the hole down to the toes; cut off the bottom part where you walk including the heal and sewed the two tops of the socks together at the ends so that there was one long sock strap. I use them as a headband that ties at the back of my head. I've gotten so many complements on my "cool" headband when I was out and about that I was a little reluctant to tell anyone that they were made from old socks!

It really does look pretty neat!

Using the socks for dusting is a great idea. I am going to try it!

I'm going to make a separate posting on how to make a sock headband. It will be in the reduce, reuse and recycle area.

Ok, the headband is posted with pics on a separate thread.
