A friend gifted me enough yarn for a sweater! Now, what to make? If I start now, I might be done in time for winter!

I can't think of any free patterns off the top of my head but these two paid ones came to mind. I've never made either one before so can't tell you how easy the patterns are but the finished pictures that other people make always look good. Here are the links:

In the book Last Minute Knitted Gifts, by Joelle Hoverson there is a nice DK placket neck sweater that I am making for DS.

Isn't the Hourglass sweater from LMKG also DK weight?
Sorry I can't be more help. I've had 1500 yards of DK weight alpaca lurking in my stash for a few months, and after frogging several sweaters I cast on for a garter stitch wrap. So :
