Divorce and child custody

I'm thinking of filing for divorce. I'm just wondering about the custody process. I know it depends what state you live in and also, obviously, how the parents feel about it.

I'm just wondering if anyone could relate their experiences with the custody process. If it's too painful, though, I don't want to dredge up bad emotions, and I apologize.

My STBX never wanted physical custody. We both want the kids to live with me. He sees them 1-2x/week and has overnights w/3 yo DD. Since we agreed, there has yet to be any real arguments on this issue. The only kind of annoying thing is that for logistical reasons he mostly visits the kids at my place, but it works out ok b/c I have family nearby so I go over to their place when he's around.
