Crochet direction=crazy making

or is it just me?? Or does this only prove how new to crochet I am?

What does this mean (FTR I'm making a hat and this is the ruffle): Work 72 sc evenly spaced around bottom of rib. Work 2 rnds sc,inc 36 sts evenly spaced each rnd - 144 sts. Work even in rnds of sc for 1 1/2 inches; work 1 rnd sc from left to right. Fasten off.

I get the 72 evenly spaced. I'm pretty well lost from there on out. Am I to understand that I work a round of 72 sc+36sctog 2 times? If so...what comes next?

And while I'm asking so many questions...how the heck does one figure out how to work stitches evenly spaced anyhow?

THANK YOU!

Yikes.
I'm an experienced crocheter and I don't get it, either. Is there a pic you can look at? Regarding evenly spaced...it's not easy. But it helps me to divide it up evenly so that I can make sure I'm on the right count at a given milestone. Make sense?

My thoughts:
1 row single crochet around the bottom
1 row of sc, two sc in next, sc (for an increase of 36 per 72)
do that again, total increase 72.
do a bunch more rows of sc to make the hat 1.5 inches longer
The final row is stitched backwards around, and it's sc.

Why would you increase towards the end? Just wondering. I only increase at the end if I mess up at the top... lol. yeah... and I mess up at the top often. I guess i'm just crazy...

To make a hat rim that rolls up, ruffly.

Ah. Makes sense. I sometimes make a lace like edge using chains around the edge.

That's how I end my hats, too with sc, ch1 or ch2, sc.

Yep, that's it. The original wasn't written very clearly but Apricot nailed it.

One additional tip, note the number of stitches afterward as such:

1 row single crochet around the bottom (72 stitches total)
1 row of sc, two sc in next, sc (108 stitches total)
do that again, total increase 72. (144 stitches total)

And finish according to Apricot's notes.

This technique has saved my sanity on many occasions, and has helped me to determine whether the error is mine or a copy-editing error as well.

Would you be willing to post a picture when you're done? It sounds like a very cute pattern!

YAY! Thank you...made total sense and I finished the hat. There are lots of errors and places where I sort of made it up as I went along but over all for my first project other than dishcloths I'm so thrilled! Sadly it does not fit dd all that well but we have a friend who I know it will fit so will give it away.

I'll try to post a photo, for ohh's and ahh's and some critique on some problems I ran into, when my model wakes in the am.

Thanks for the help!

Here it is!

And then a close up that better shows the hat

(hope those work I've never done a photo on here before.)

This hat was worked from the bottom up -the ruffle and a band of ribbing were added.

A couple of questions:

I think I made the ribbing a little too short which is what makes the hat a teensy bit too small. The pattern said 18in stretched. How far do you stretch? A gentle stretch or full on?

In your opinion, would the hat look better with the ribbing done in the main hat color rather than the ruffle? I chose the ruffle color because I thought that doing such a small ribbing in a multi color yarn would look kind of funny/busy. Am I wrong? My feeling won't be hurt!

When sewing things together do you usually sew or sc things? I've tried both and thought that doing a sc seems more secure. Is it even *legal* to do sc as a way to put things together? I'm attempting a sweater next...so I'd like to do it the *right way* if there is one!

That's all for now!

(and FYI, that "work sc backwards" is also known as Crab Stitch, in case you want to every use it again and find tutorials for it)
