BSJ and provisional cast on

So I want to cast on the first and last sections of the baby surprise jacket using a provisional cast on so I can go back and lengthen the sleeves. How would I cast on the middle stitches? Backward loops? Knit on?

I'd probably do either long-tail with a separate piece of yarn for the "tail" or knitted on since backwards loop never works well for me.
