Anyone pregnant *really* taking this much CLO???

The prego diet from the WAPF recommends 20,000 IU of A and 2,000 IU of D - that would be 4 servings (of 2 caplets each) of my Blue Ice High Vitamin CLO !!!!

Wow! That is a lot and is very expensive. And no, I'm not about to take my CLO outside of a caplet

They're not recommending that much from CLO, just from total diet. The recommendation for pregnancy (and breastfeeding) is 20,000 IU of A/2,000 IU of D from CLO (and I don't take that much).

Oops, I misquoted the numbers But still, that amount from CLO is equivalent of 4 servings (2 caplets each) of the high vitamin Blue Ice CLO I have.

Do you not take so much due to getting it elsewhere in diet? Just curious...

Hi there, delurking to join the insanity. I just started TTC (for the first time) and had been taking about a tablespoon of high vitamin CLO for the past 8 months or so. When my supply ran out the last time, I ordered the capsules of fermented CLO and skate liver oil. I have been taking one CLO and two skate every day and feeling pretty good about myself. Then I finally paid attention to the labels yesterday morning and noticed that I was only getting just over 3000 iu of A. Not enough. I have upped it to two CLO caps and four skate. But that is still under 10,000 iu of A. I really can't see taking any more pills than that (I am also taking desiccated liver, a food-based B complex, bee pollen, evening primrose oil, and Cal/Mag/Zinc and Lugol's in a glass of water). I know I could get a lot of the above from food, but I am an extra-paranoid first-timer.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for the constant (and entertaining) source of good information and good vibes.

I took 2 tsp of high vit clo a day during my last pregnancy. It wasn't all that bad for me.

I actually take vitamin A from fish oil and a liquid D3 and not CLO (long story). I take less vitamin A (about 10,000 IU a day) and more vitamin D (close to 3,000 IU). Basically I'm not convinced that much vitamin A is necessary or traditional...I wish the WAPF would state where they get the information to base those numbers on, because as far as I can tell they're pulling them out of thin air. The only number I've been able to find as far as an actual analysis of the vitamin A content of a traditional diet is 30,000 IU average for the Inuit, who ate primarily animal products, and (I would guess) probably had a higher dietary amount of vitamin A than most other groups. And I do feel that I have a fair amount of vitamin A in my diet as I eat around 8 Tbsp of butter a day (partially pastured) and several pastured eggs a day

kl5 -- Welcome!! I live in the Chicago area too! I'll PM you!

And I too wonder about the Vit. A/D numbers provided by the WAPF.

I'm not pregnant or even TTC just yet (maybe next year!), but I think I will probably just try to eat a healthy TF diet (heavy on the eggs, leafy greens, butter, etc.) and supplement with just a tsp/TB/capsule/whatever I can afford of HVCLO daily and not worry too much more about it after that.

Thanks for the welcome! :

And for the insight about goals, arbitrary and otherwise. For now, I'm sucking it up and taking more capsules, spread throughout the day (which is probably better anyway). My husband was alarmed when he saw my pill box this morning and has expressed worry about my taking so many supplements. I send him articles all the time by SF and the WAPF website, but I think he either glances through them or doesn't read them at all. Anyone have any advice on getting an SO on board? He has no problem with our mostly TF way of eating, but it's the "pills" he's worried about.

Thanks!
Kristen

I took that much. Or tried to!

I take that much when not pregnant. It really helps clear up skin and joint problems for me when I take big doses regularly.

I aim to take 7,500IU daily. However, sometimes I miss a day here and there.

When I was preggo, I averaged between 5000 -10,000IU daily. I take the capsules and 2=5,000IU.

What capsules do you have that are that high? My blue ice brand "high vitamin" ones are nowhere near so high. I'll get your brand next time.

I take the Blue Ice Therapeutics (CLO and BO combo) and take 5cc (1tsp) which is 25,000u vit A. Totally do-able as long as I have some water or milk to chase it with.

Hmmm, something smells fishy, !

I take blue ice as well. On the back of my bottle it says the serving size is 2 capsules and that equals 5000IU of Vit A. I usually take 3 a day.

Are you sure you have the high vitamin capsules?

Not pregnant or a TFer, but I saw this on new posts. I do take CLO sometimes, and I've found that if I add it to a smoothie, I can't even tell it's there. That might be an easy way to get it in if you don't want to just drink it plain.

I have read that it's harmful to have too much vitamin A in pregnancy... is this a subject of controversy?

My husband is from Iceland and everyone there takes CLO on a daily basis. The midwifery site in Iceland recommends that pregnant mothers take "krakkalýsi" which is a cod liver oil specifically for children, because it has less vitamin A. (I am TTC and was going to ask my MIL to send/bring some).

I am curious about the recommendation for high vitamin A. Does WAPF explain somewhere?

There is info on the WAPF site on vitamin A. The issue is with *synthetic* vitamin A. Some CLO has sythetic A and D added to it. Some does not. The naturally occuring A is not harmful in large doses to a certain point. The WAPF article explains it all in a lot more detail.
