Need Help with Picot Edge

Has anyone done picot edging while knitting? What type of cast on did you use?
The pattern I have says to use Cable Method cast on, but i find it very difficult to work and very tight. I need to get 72 sts on and that could take me an entire day using the Cable Method.

Any other suggestions? I normally do thumb cast on, but it's too loose to make the edging look good.

I really want to do this project I just can't seem to get it started.

oh, i guess I should also add that I'm starting with the picot edge, not finishing with it (i know some patterns have you do the edging at the end) if that makes a difference.
TIA

I've always done my picot edging last.

What are you making?

a baby hat--like a beanie. i'm knitting it with regular needles though, not in the round (i'll sew up a seam at the end) so I don't think i *can* do the edging last.

I tend to do a picot bindoff when I want that sort of decorative edging on my knitting. Do you have a specific pattern you are working with?
