A question for you mamas who VBAC'ed with an OB **UPDATE**

Did you have to consult with another OB at the end of your pregnancy? My ob and I have been planning to VBAC this whole pregnancy and he just told me today he wants me to consult with his partner to get a second opinion. I asked why, and he just said it was practice policy. He thinks I am a perfect VBAC candidate and wants his partner to check and see if he thinks the same.
I am perfectly comfortable seeing this doc, I actually consulted with him during my last pregnancy when my doc wanted to induce me for pre-e/HELLPS.

Does this sound weird to you? Would you go to the consult?

I didn't have to do that, but I can see how it could be practice policy in case you end up with that OB when you give birth so they know more background and such.

I haven't heard of that before, but I live in a small town with many single doc practices. Is there a possibility that this other doc may attend your birth? Maybe it is more of a meet and greet type thing.

Does this other doctor have any say in whether or not your primary doc continues to support your VBAC?

It's his partner? The OB office I vbac'd with (twice) had about 6 OBs in it and I rotated appts with them, so I suppose I consulted with all of them. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think he might. If he doesn't think I am a good VBAC candidate it might sway my doc. Its not a meet and greet...my doc covers his own OB patients. Technically he is a family doc who does OB and delivers all his own patients unless he is out of town. He isn't planning on going anywhere that I know of. He made it seem like he needed the other doc's opinion.

I had my son (vbac) in a huge hospital and I DID NOT end up with my wonderful supportive OB. I ended up with a horrible woman that I have never seen before in my life. I am traumatized and am considering seeking counseling. Anyway, I would meet and talk with any and all doctors that could be assisting you. Put names to faces. Decide who you are comfortable with and who you are not. Be prepared.

I would probably go to the consult. It could be policy and a way to back him/OB up in the event something does not go right with the VBAC. That is my first thought. I think there are so many issues with malpractice nowadays that many MDs have to cover themselves over and over JUST IN CASE." Good luck - from your short note, it does sound like your OB is still willing to do the VBAC.

It makes sense to me too. My dr has a practice but I never met any of them and when I went into labor I ended up with stupid ones who tried to push epidurals/c/s on me I wish I could meet my obs fellow obs in her practice.......I am dreading labor because of the experience I had. Yes, I got my vbac but boy did I have to fight for it

No, the OB I go to is in solo practice and attends all births himself. However, I would at least meet the other dr so it won't be a total surprise if he is at your birth.

When I first started going there, he had two midwives on staff and you rotated appointments and who ever was on call would attend your birth (even vbacs). For various reasons, by the time I gave birth a little over a year later, both midwives had left and he was on his own. He now has a nurse practitioner on staff and you can see her if you want, but I don't think you have to since she won't be attending your birth. However, if he is called away to a birth during office hours you will see her for the appointment unless you reschedule.

I had both of my VBAC's at the same (large) practice. I did not have to consult with another OB other than the one who was my primary. I did rotate appts through all the docs, but the decision was made and finalized with my primary doc. (Well, actually I made and finalized the decision and told them of such, but you know what I mean. lol)

I am sure this is just for litigation purposes more than anything, I doubt the doc will really "sway" your doc's opinion. This just helps him cover his tail if something bad were to happen and you were to sue! (that's my take at least!) Why don't you just ask your doc about it? Ask if his opinion can change your docs opinion etc. Most of all don't worry!!

I went to a practice with 3 OBs and their policy is that you rotate and see all of them during pregnancy. They rotate hospital duty, so delivery is handled by whomever is on hospital duty that day.

I think this is it. My doc attends all his own births. Canada does not have the same malpractice/insurrance issues that the States has. I think that the partner is the one who will assist with a c/s if I end up having one (lets hope not).
I guess I will find out on Tuesday.

Well I have to say that my doc's partner is a UAV and that was my worst prenatal appointment ever.

All he did was sit there and ask if I was sure I wanted to do this and didn''t I know about the risks. Grrrr.
Then proceeded to tell me that now I would get sectioned a lot quicker....like if my labor stalls. I told him that the only way I was conseting to another c/s was if baby was in distress and I thought the risk of rupture was worth taking compared to the risk of abdominal surgury.

Then he turns around and says, "So you actually think you can do it?"

I left so upset. All of a sudden now I am scared and I don't want to do this anymore.

Hugs Vanessa. What a grrrrr...argh...uav.

I saw a specialist during my pregnancy with Ro who was...well. He told me any dr who attended a vbac should lose their license, vbac should be illegal, asked me if I wanted to kill my baby, and then took dh aside and told him that pregnany women are really emotional and he (dh) needed to tell me NO VBAC since "think how she'd feel if she killed your baby because of some decision she made while hormonally incapacitated? It's your job to tell her no." And then he told me he was writing a letter to my OBs telling them that under no circumstances should I be encouraged to vbac.

I think I posted here after that visit and I was livid. And scared about my OBs reaction. Call or visit your OB. Tell him exactly what you think about this other dr's opinion... bring stats and numbers that support your views and tell them you are more determined than ever to birth naturally and you want to know if you need to change care providers to get the support you need.

I know Canada has a different system in place but you must be able to change care providers, right?

I'm so sorry... BIG supportive hugs to you and your belly. Of course you can birth normally. A vbac is the default birth after all! Hang in there...you're so close!

That is completely unacceptable on his part. As for your VBAC, of course you can do it. Barring any life-threatening emergency, this is what your body was meant to do. The odds are in your favor!

I was told I probably would not be able to vbac either and I did it...You can do it. Dont listen to the dr. It is so much easier and quicker for the drs to do a c/s.....I mean my labor was 5 1/2 hours total and they STILL were impatient and wanted to do a c/s....

ps. I told them where to go.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with such ignorance and negativity. No Mama should ever be exposed to such a thing.

You ARE strong and you CAN do it!!! Your body was designed to do this...you absolutely can, can CAN do it!!
