Wisdom Teeth Extractions

DD was referred to an oral surgeon due to having a wisdom tooth that is pushing one of her 12 year molars out of place. Her dentist was super concerned. We saw the surgeon today and he said that the 12 yr molar is actually starting to come out the roof of her mouth due to the wisdom tooth. He recommends that if we remove one, we take all four because the xray shows that there is absoultely no room for them to come in. I asked about her age, she will be 12 next month. He said that she has the mouth of a 15 yr old (in more ways than one!! ) Anyway, we booked the surgery and then I find out that it has to go through medical and not dental due to the anesthesia and the surgeon is not in the insurance company's network. : So, I am trying to find a provider because the cost is in the area of $2000. I have had mine removed but have never heard of anyone having them removed this young. Wondering if anyone else has..... thanks.

I hate to have her go through this but she has perfect teeth and I do not want to see these wisdom teeth cause problems.

I had mine removed when I was I think 15 (possibly 16). They hadn't started coming in yet, and didn't even have roots. I'd had years of orthodonture, and when they *did* start coming in, they would have totally wrecked all that work.

The procedure was done under a general and was by an oral surgeon. I don't remember any of the details of how it was paid; we had good coverage but through Kaiser, so I know they didn't pay for it (wasn't a Kaiser doctor). Might have been out of pocket. I healed faster than people usually do since there were no roots removed, just tooth buds (and that might be the case for some of your daughter's wisdom teeth).

Not sure how much this helps, but FWIW...

I had mine out at about her age. If I recall rightly, they just put me into a twilight sleep, not all the way out. My younger sister had six teeth taken out during middle school, so it's certainly not unheard-of. I guess we all just got lucky...

I have wonderful coverage which would pay for it all, with no deductible but the surgeon is just not in their network! It sucks cause we both really liked him.

They did say and it is plain to see on the xrays that there are no roots.... just the buds. She has very, very straight teeth and a perfect bite and their fear is that if allowed to come in, it will ruin all of this. He said that she would be under less than an hour. In my mind, it makes sense to remove them now before they cause any issues (of course, I am also of the mindset that since I am done using my boobs, they could go also, but that is a whole different thread!!)

Reading your post makes me feel better.... thank you.
