novice spinning question

I'm a total novice, but interested in spinning. I'm going to take a class... my question is, is roving less expensive than equivalent yarn? And if I ever get good enough spinning, can I then sell the yarn for at least as much as I paid for the roving? Or more? I don't really want to knit, but I might want to learn to weave... Or give gifts of yarn to my knitting friends!
Thanks for any beginner help!

Raw fleece is far less expensive, undyed fibre is less expensive, handpainted fibre is on a par with cheaper handpainted yarn, and etsy is full of handspun skeins, which apparently sell. If you're going to go down that route, I heartily recommend going to craftster and participating in fiber friday...
