Surprising comment from skater kids

I just had to share this thing that happened today because I thought it was neat. DH, DD, and I were leaving the library. DH was slinging DD. There was a big group of teens skateboarding in the parking lot and one of them looks at us and says, "Hey, thats cool," and when we looked at him thinking, "what are you talking about" he added, "the way you're carrying that kid." I'm used to getting comments from all sorts of people but never a teenager until today.

I get it at church a lot. I had one guy look at me and go, "You have a baby strapped to you."

I was wearing Noodle in a podegi at the grocery store and I had an African woman come up to me and tell me that "THAT'S how mamas are supposed to carry their babies, close to thier bodies!".

To me there is nothing sweeter than a sweet teenage boy. When I see a teenage boy being gentle and kind to someone it just melts my heart.

I used to get respectful comments from many teen boys when we lived in the BRonx. They helped w/ bags, etc. and probably b/c many were immigrants or kids of immigrants from countires where breastfeeding, etc. were the norm, I was never uncomforable.

I have never used a sling (never got teh knack) but there was a large group of African (dunno teh country) women who used the same laundromat as I. They sooooo impressed me! They wore their baes on their backs with a simple piece of cloth, and the babes were ALWAYs so content! Even more impressive, as I struggled up the hill with my laundry cart, I saw (no lie) women with a major load of laundry, perfectly wraped in a sheet, walking up the hill, carrying it on her head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have so much to learn......

I was in Hot Topic (a kind of 'goth/punk/alternative' store in the mall) and a girl working there (lots of piercings, pink hair, tattoos, etc.) thought our Maya Wrap was the neatest thing. She kept going on and on about how cool she thought it was.

I went to Michael's (a craft store) yesterday and two people just *loved* how I was carrying ds in the maya wrap! One even asked how to get one for a shower gift for someone! So neat

I have already gotten some "what do you have in there?", and "can he breathe/is he comfortable?" comments, on the flip side... but its nice to be able to educate people about slings, and everyone seems to think they are neat/want one when I tell them "He just falls asleep whenever I wear this and walk around"!

But very cool that skater kids thought it was neat, and took the time to tell you and dh!!

I'm in middle TN. I haven't had anyone act like I'm weird, but I haven't been here long and haven't gotten out much. The other day we were at the supermarket and some people were giving out free samples of hot dogs. One of them said (with a real thick southern accent), "Now look at her riding in there. She looks like a future hot dog eater." Now that was kind of weird.

Yeah, we have only been here since April. I don't go out much either, I did start college back up though and have 2 girls in 2 of my classes that seem ok. One of them has a sil that bf her dd until she was 4! But my neighbors are pretty mainstream, one made a comment about me nursing Bella when she was 16months, they don't know she is still nursing at almost 21 months. i don't talk to them much. I pretty much keep to myself around here. The comment was strange:

Doesn't surprise me at all. Usually the teens who are outside the mainstream by having weird clothes or hair, grow up to be the ones that are outside the mainstream by not vaxing and having homebirths. I think it's all related to thinking about who you are and what works for you rather than accepting the status quo.

I met one girl in HS by saying, "I'm not trying to be mean or anything, 'cause I know people can be really rude, but why PINK? [hair]"

She responded by saying, "Well, I was going to dye it purple but I was afraid someone would think I had school spirit." [purple & gold being the school colors] We got along great after that.

Five years later, I'm working in an herb store, at a sort of non-conventional strip-mall, about 4/5 mos pregnant with ds#2, and guess who walks in. Well, she was this (blonde again) little hippie earth mama, who had an illegal homebirth in AZ, and a sweet little baby in tow, and we immediately chatted away about vaxing and birthing, etc...
