My DC was chased down by two pittbulls. - Page 3

Expecting flames because I think saying things like "poison the dogs!" is reprehensible. These dogs have been unlucky enough to land in a home with bad owners, and if they need to be put down, the city should do it's darn job and put them to sleep humanely. Rat poison, shooting and choking are all horrible ways to die and I'm kind of shocked that people would be suggesting these things. We all want to protect our children, but that's just not OK. In the event of an attack I'd do what I had to do to save my child, including braining an animal with a tire iron, but a preemptive strike like those suggested is cruel. And most likely illegal.

Here's what I'm wondering (and maybe you have elaborated further in the thread, OP- I read the whole thing a couple of days ago). Have the dogs been threatening your kids or other people in other ways than barking and chasing when they go by the dog's house on the sidewalk? I'm not at all diminishing the fear and trauma your dc have been through, that is certainly real. Your poor kids. But many other normal, perfectly nice dogs might bark and give chase too, if a child is running or using a skateboard on the sidewalk in front of their house, which they don't know is not their territory to protect (they shouldn't be out there without a leash, but since they are.) It's an instinct to chase. I would not allow it from my dogs, but it is natural.

So are they cornering people or menacing them in other ways besides running after running kids? If not, then they just need the city to enforce the leash law. If they are, then like thismama said, they need to be put down. There's no room in this world for a human-aggressive Pit Bull, and I hope you can get the city to understand that they are a real threat.

I dont think a pre emptive strike is reprehensible. I think that if I were very sure this animal was a threat to my child, I would not wait until it had my child by the throat to act to protect him or her. Just saying.

Any update?

edited to add: of course the city should take of it, but they have already been clear that they WONT until someone is actually attacked and perhaps killed, so unfortunatley, something must be done.

You may want to contact an attorney to ask about a restraining order or civil nuisance case. Sorry to say that you would be put in the position to do this and run risks. I would not stop with the city workers you spoke with -- call your mayor and city council and ask them to run interference for you. Good luck.

I do not recommend poisoning the dog, it's usually a criminal offense. Regarding the lawyers, you need someone who will simply scare the neighbors and the landlord with a nuisance suit or TRO, not a personal injury lawyer, because there has not been a personal injury.

I was going to suggest going straight to the elected officials. I'd also keep a copy of your letter to the mayor, and contact the local press if you don't get results that way.

Really wouldn't want to poison the dogs- but only because it is a criminal offence, not because of undue suffering on the animal. I am pretty angered that a child would have to go through the psychogical trauma of being chased by aggressive dogs, never mind being bitten. If I was in the OP's shoes I would have NO PROBLEM with thoughts of poisoning or shooting. Except that the owners would probably start the cycle all over again with new animals

update.....

First off, Ladies, THANKYOU, for your support amd replies.

I am still in the process of for ming letters to send yo various city sects. I am still playing phone tag with one lawyer who is willing to write a threatening letter to the slumlord about his liability. This is a slow process, as I have to do everything secretly-away from my DC, so as to not further keep the hype at the surface. I am slowly building my case-and oh yes! a letter will be in the paper.

The pit bull owners are hard criminals, and they are huge, stupid druggies. My DH is a very fit 5'8" guy. While it has crossed our minds to ploy to poison these dogs(and my plumber actually offered!), I cannot do anything remotely illegal, as it is against my morals. That being said, I have a heavy bat with me outside at all times, and a backup shovel. If something did happen to these dogs, the owners would replace them with the same-they are there to safeguard their drugs, and make up for their hmm,ummm...p*nis compensation.

As of about one week ago,the dogs have been spotted on a leash. The mail lady said if she sees the dogs off leash one more time, she is required to stop mail on our street-that will get the attention of those neighbors who don't have DC, and don't call animal control.

IN the meantime, while DD is getting better, poor DS is getting worse. He tells
us everyday, that he has nightmares about the dogs and the guys. He doesn't want to walk by the house-even in DH's arms. He is just absolutely terrified. I can't write here, what it is we would like to do these @ssholes.

No, I couldn't sell our house to owners with DC or visiting DC, and I don't see moving as a reasonable solution, as who knows who we would move next door to ? There are criminal creeps everywhere, in every single neighborhood-rich or poor.

Anyway- just letting you all know that I am focusing on getting the slumlord to get the people out, and changing our city's laws. Much more ups my sleeve, but that is the jist of it....

oh man.. I hope your ds starts feeling better soon. That would be so hard for me to watch my child go through and not have any easy solution.

It's good that the mail carrier is getting involved. Stopping mail service to the whole street would definitely make a lot of people sit up and take notice!

How awful! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! And I'm soooo glad that the dogs at least responded and didn't actually physically harm your son!

Personally, I've shot at dogs that I felt posed a threat to myself/my animals. BUT, I live in the country... a very different scenario. When I lived in the city, I'd walk at night with my mom, and we carried pepper spray. Maybe a good thing to have around?
